Currently running Overclocked 1660ti within striking distance of 2060 (sans ray tracing obviously). The card itself isn’t dying, but I have had it since Aug 2019 and she is running higher to maintain my 2 1440p monitors.
I want to wait for 6800xt stock to stabilize and grab one… But that could end up not happening until the NEXT gen of cards (that I won’t be able to afford) are announced/release.
I also don’t feel like the 6700xt potential performance uplift doesn’t justify the almost 500usd investment (Which I doubt the cards will be or stay that cheap when they release).
it is the only component left that I would be looking to upgrade.
System-
AMD Ryzen 5 5600x
MSI Tomahawk Max B550
32gb G.Skill Aegis @3200mhz
Asus P-series AC wireless
2x Acer Abidpx 31.5 Inches WQHD (1440p)
Is there a reason outside of just wanting to upgrade? You can try your luck tomorrow either on AMD website at like 6am PST or wait until bestbuy drops. Seems very likely Bestbuy will be doing a drop tomorrow.
Not simply “wanting to upgrade”… more like I know that the GPU is on the way out. It hasn’t started doing crazy things yet, but performance at several games has gone down enough that I have to had to reduce graphical settings to maintain FPS and smoothness. I would rather not wait for the GPU to become a paperweight before making the upgrade (as doing so would make me inclined to make a sacrificial purchase as opposed to a solid purchase that will enhance my gaming experience)
It’s worth it only if you can get them at msrp. And by msrp I mean closer to reference prices, not that newegg AMD bs that’s happening right now ($1200 6800XT, looking at you)
This is gonna sound “crazy”, but also try to find a Ryzen 7 or 9 chip. It should help with stabilizing any monitor issue (more cores & threads = less bottlenecking). Your motherboard can handle most of the Ryzen 5000 & 3000 series chips (going by MSI’s website)
It doesn’t sound crazy, but it does sound inaccurate (at least for WoW, and tbh, most things people use PCs for). I stream and play just fine on a 6 core/12 thread i7 8700k (a chip that is very comparable to the 5600x that OP has). Literally 0 performance trade-offs.
Game resolution at 4013x1679 (upping widescreen of 1440p to 117% with resolution scale), graphics quality set to 10 except for view distance and environment detail at 8, and streaming via Disc at 720p 30FPS.
The myth of needing more cores and threads is still a myth (at least for most things, including playing WoW) but it has been perpetuated for years. AMD has done a great job convincing people. Every new console generation, for example, and people are claiming that more cores will be needed. Never really materializes. Some things can’t be done in parallel.
There’s some benefit to smoothness with more cores that don’t really get captured in benchmarks and data - I’ve experienced it recently first hand.
That said, I don’t think CPU is what’s affecting your performance, though.
What do you mean by this, exactly? That the same games are getting worse performance now? Or that new games aren’t giving you the performance that you want?
If its the former, game updates can sometimes have negative effects to performance, and also thermal issues in your graphics card. If it’s old, perhaps a repaste or good blowing out with air can go a long way. Other things to look at would be concurrent processes or other things that can eat up GPU resources (Wallpaper engine, browser with hardware acceleration, etc.)
If it’s the latter, well, that’s just how it goes. In this case, getting a new GPU is a good choice.
Exactly.
What you need to do is to get vid cards where suppliers do. The reason vid cards are so expensive is people are willing to pay for them. Companies are not willing to pay these sky high prices so companies still get them below MSRP.
I’m just going to wait. I have a 5700xt and I don’t see a point paying $300 or more in markups just to get a 15% or 20% boost. Maybe if I was still rocking a 970 or something I’d go for it. Unless I see a new card at MRSP without added tariff pricing, I’m staying put.
I moved from an Intel 7 year old Proc with AMD 5600xt, I was getting 90 ~ 100 FPS same monitor setup I have now…
Except now I can run ultra \ high and get so much more color and quality… it’s like an entirely different game… I just run around Bastion looking at the colors and scenery and am like… ‘uh… shadows, green grass, and blue skies oh my’… it’s awesome. I can’t even play the game anymore I get distracted…
Ok 3,2, 1 pull… wait a sec I need to compare this new ray tracing and see how these mobs look… hey you look better dead now tank!
