I lose close to over 80 frames when I turn raytracing off/on in stormwind. Anybody else experience the same at 1440p?
I’m showing 60fps ultra
144+fps ultra without raytracing.

Shadows hurt fps. I can run max settings on a gtx 1080, in 1440p @ 200+ fps (gsync) when i turn shadows to low.
Does wow really need raytracing? Does wow really need ultra high quality shadows?
No.
Raytracing is a pointless performance hog.
Turn it off.
My shadows and water details are always on low. They’re FPS killers. I like my 150 FPS too much.
This.
Ray Tracing is new tech that will unfortunately not hit the performance numbers people are expecting. It’s like how GPU makers have been promising quality 8k performance for years now. It might work perfectly but only in certain situations.
Yeah. Raytracing does that. Nvidia intended the performance hit to be mitigated by DLSS. But I kinda doubt we’ll get DLSS in WoW. It seem blizz is going for full team red.
Something wrong with your PC
I’m running at 4k ultrawide (3840 x 1600)
all settings ultra / max slider
ray tracing on high
I’m getting a solid 120FPS in stormwind.
I don’t use ray tracing normally though because I would prefer to be locked to 160FPS
EDIT: Ok it dips down to 110FPS when flying about depending where I am looking.
I get the same fps on my 2070 super at 1440p raytracing is pointless just turn it off.
Agreed it makes very little difference except at night in places with lots of light sources. But when it should look its best is when it tanks you the hardest.
The product is not ready for use.
No point in ray tracing in this game
character selection locked at 60 fps
how do i turn it on anyway? It says my card doesn’t support it and i’m on 3080 (dx12 turned on)
It’s under advanced “ray traced shadows”
It’s the only ray tracing I’m aware of in this game.
It sells video cards. Just think of it as the cupholder in your car. When the auto manufacturers first started putting cupholders in cars and family vans pre-SUV days, it was an extra feature. Now all vehicles have cupholders.
Same story will play out for ray tracing.
It also requires a certain Windows update. If you don’t have that in addition to the right driver, you won’t be able to use it.
Not worth using anyway though. It cuts FPS by an enormous amount for very little graphical benefit since the RTX in WoW is just shadows and not all lighting.
win10 says i have no new updates, video drivers are latest aswell
lolraytracing
Are you CPU bottlenecked?
Lets say I’m sitting at 160fps in 3840x 1600 full ultra settings. 200% scale.
GPU usage is ~50% because I’m in a raid. (lower then flying in a city etc)
Soon as I turn on ray tracing shadows to high my GPU usage goes to 93% and my frames still stay at 160fps
However if I’m flying around a busy city with 160fps in 3840x 1600 full ultra settings. 200% scale. Them my GPU sits at a bout 90%+ usage to keep that 160fps WITHOUT ray tracing.
If you turn ray tracing on in that situation then FPS drops to about 110-120FPS and the GPU usage drops as well. Probably because a bottleneck has hit somewhere in the overload.
So if you can’t have both or you have to lower other settings to keep your GPU usage at the right amount to keep your intended frames. Ray tracing is the last thing you should ever turn on (in wow at least)
Why would you get a 3090 and sit at low resolution? Should be gaming at 4K or that card is being wasted.
Also, WOW raytracing is poorly implemented and ultimately the graphics engine is still heavily CPU-based. Try something like Control that was built from the ground up to utilize all RTX features if you want your card to shine.
