Another thread here on GD got me thinking about “Hell Levels”. I wonder if the 60-80 level range prior to the XP boost (or nerf depending on perspective) will ever be referred to and remembered as “Hell Levels”. There was another early MMO (EverQuest) that had two very distinct levels (54 and 59) that still have me cringe from time to time.
I wonder if the 60-80 range will have a similar affect on people when all is said and done. I’ve leveled a couple toons through that now and the grind is very real.
EQ will always hold the title for hell levels IMO, considering any given level range in EQ was worse than 60-80 in WoW. At least when I played it was. Haven’t played in 10+ years, so I don’t know if they increased experience gained on Live EQ.

I leveled this guy up from 1 without an heirlooms or XP boots, and I leveled through Northrend very quickly doing quests/dungeons/BGs. In terms of questing, I got through the first zone and just got into the second before I moved on to Pandaria.
YMMV, I guess.
It’s not my favorite in game activity but this Is my first toon leveling since cata. Its slightly nostalgic and I remember quests objectives from 8-10 years ago.
I just don’t like scaling it’s sometimes confusing, I remember to go to exact zones based on level. Makes dungeon ques faster but I avoid those
Leveling alts is never a high point for me, sure there are some fun ones but for the most part it feels long and tedious.
Tera use to have 2 hellish levels called walls before they fixed it. I can’t remember exactly what levels they were, I think one in mid 40’s and other around 52 or 53, but you would run out of quests and have to do dungeons over and over and over again to get past them. Took a long time to go through those 2 levels and it sucked.
WoW’s 60 - 80 was bad and so was the 90’s but at least you could grind it out on quests and not have to do dungeons repeatedly. I’d say as a hellish leveling range WoW,s 60-80 was the worst I’ve seen but as single levels go it has to go to Tera.
40 was the first hell level in EQ.
Agreed. 35-36 took over a week of hardcore grinding.
That is forever etched in my brain, chain pulling endlessly in The Overthere.
They added “Hot Zones” back around the Anguish era IIRC, but EQ is still the most severe out of the MMO’s when it comes to leveling.
30 was.
After that it was every 5 levels.
35 was considered the most severe, with 40 a close second.
Having leveled a few Allied Races through to 110, I can safely say that 60-80 is definitely hell. Hence why Blizzard’s giving it the buff it really needed. It wasn’t too bad, since you could simply grind Kara trash from 72-80, but since that got nerfed, it got a lot worse.
Is this a joke? 60-80 isnt even that bad? sure its a bit slower than some of the other areas but if you quest out 2 zones you would pretty much be done. The nerf will be nice but to say its hell is a complete joke.
60-80 was good. Not sure when they Nerf it. I used to go to area 52 once i was 60. You could grind mobs for about three hours total and hit 69. From there it was easy. Now it like what happen. Last two months I found out once good are gone. it is rough.
He going on 36 hours in game. i am hitting all prime quest and areas. It is very slow now. With bg being all alliance wins for last three weeks and dungeon only good for quest. That 80 mark looking quite grim. Plus most quest stop giving good gear. Not sure what happen. Some have taken away bonuses stats (mastery, endurance,ECT). Only offer basic stats.
it’s easy enough to just dungeon spam through that bracket - I find 80-110 many times worse since there’s virtually zero reward for even getting levels in that range.
Leveling is a boring slog; Give us back our “XP FROM DUNGEONS” let higher level guildies run the lowbies to get them geared and leveled.
13 Years this was allowed and suddenly it isn’t!?!?!? Revert and give us back our Dungeons to level; Ones who don’t want this can simply level normally In Dungeons.
If you’ve seen everything I’m sure it sucks but I only got to complete 4 Northrend zones. Sad I had to pack my bags for Pamdaria. When I create my first alt I’ll do all the zones I didn’t do in classic, Pandaria, and Northrend. So 100 percent new content. When I get a third alt, theres enough that it’s once again 100 percent new content all the way to 90. I should be seeing repeat Draneor stuff at that point.
If your new like me, 60 to 80 means nothing because there’s so much to do thru 3 or 4 characters.
Hell levels on a Troll Shadowknight - cause duh, overpowered. Sigh
