At what point does Classic stop being Classic and just become Retail? I feel like we’re pretty much there at this stage.

When it reaches the current expansion.

If we had Classic TWW right now that TWW is current, then Classic would have become retail.

So you’d be cool with Classic carrying on all the way up to TWW? It’ll still be “Classic”, right? Because retail would have well and truly moved on by then.

I see no reason not to allow TWW fans to experience TWW again years after it’s over.

Why do we fight ??

Because the leaves fall , god dam it

Do you think it’s realistic?

If WoW is still alive in 13 years, sure.

Mop is 13 years old. It’s very much Classic material.

this question reminds me of the scene from Spaceballs, where helmet is telling him to fast forward, and they catch up to that exact moment in time. It ends up being a “when will then be now“? Soon lol

I dunno, I think interest will fizzle out. You could already start to see it with Cata Classic. MoP is one of the better expansions imo, which is great, but the future of Classic beyond legacy servers (vanilla classic) just seems really random and uncertain. Because of that I find it difficult to get invested in, as much as I’d like to.

These were really well done videos. I enjoyed them!

part of me wishes that each version of classic just stayed locked in place. So that if you wanted to play retail, you could go back to it however, the classic version would only ever go as high as that version and then it would stay frozen. So people who insisted on only liking the game up to a certain point could continue playing the game up to that certain point. then, if they change their minds, they could always copy that character to the next expansion and move on otherwise they can stay frozen in time.

That’d be interesting. But I’m not sure if WoW has the playerbase to segregate and populate so many different versions of the game at one time. Maybe it’s pointless for me to dwell on it anyway and just enjoy whatever version of Classic you happen to have access to.

I don’t think it would completely segregate anyone. I think what it would do is give everybody exactly what they want and then realize that they still want more, which then brings them back to retail. Or in other situations it would allow them to go play the favorite version of their game and then simply come back to retail so they can run mythic plus and have something else to do. It’s all about the options really. let’s face it. Anyone who went to play classic still plays retail, even if they won’t admit it.

it’s not even classic or like retail anymore it’s an experimental playground for the devs
:cherries:

Given the resources being put into Classic, I wish I could agree, but my brother and his son will only play Classic. He listened to a certain YT influencer years ago and is convinced that retail is P2P. Me, I have tried to play with them in Classic, but I get to a certain point and bow out.

Classic is a nostalgia trip, not an admission of guilt.

If classic servers ever stopped that would mean whatever expansion they stopped on was the best one and the rest of retail was a mistake.

Every expansion has flaws. And while it can be fun to re-experience the game from that era for nostalgia’s sake, the retail version of the game is made from learning from the flaws of every previous version and is therefore the best version.

We’re going to keep getting classic servers for every expansion because every expansion will eventually become nostalgic to someone.
