I was watching that Hardware Numbers guy; with max OCs it seems the 5800X3D isn’t above the others; although it is close. The big takeaway here I think is the 12900K vs 12600k at seemingly the same frequency and memory speed. There’s scaling here with the cache.
Granted, this is a canned type of test, so perhaps the network is the limiting factor in any case in real gameplay.
That said, the 5800X3D blows away the 5800X almost all the time in most games…I’m really interested in how well the upcoming 3D chips perform next year.
But the 5800X3D specifically isn’t really relevant to this discussion other than looking at how much the extra cache is helping, since the guy is choosing between a 12400 and 13600k.

That test he shows is a simple griffin run. That’s a consistent test without much load. He had a separate video where a 40man BG on the 5800X3D vs 3600 about 150% more performance vs the about 40% performance difference in the vid you linked.
There’s a more info nuggets with the WoW testing. For example Nvidia cards have higher CPU usage (card he tested), Win11 has odd issues with AMD chips, etc. There’s still a lot of perf differences I noticed on Windows vs Linux because the Windows scheduler probably hasn’t done optimizations for the new CPUs yet (AMD or Intel).
Either way, I think we both agree most CPUs will be more than playable these days. I’d personally recommend the 12400 for gaming if it’s just WoW.
I suppose it’s easy to tell someone to just buy up. As far as OCs and such, 99% of people aren’t gonna bother with that anyway.
If it were me I would not be buying into lower end Intel at this point. If the 7000 3D chip has as much of an advantage over the standard lineup as 5800X3D has over its own, that is definitely the chip to wait for presuming one can wait. I’d probably recommend an AM5/7600 with free RAM deal they have at Microcenter with an open mind for a 3D upgrade later.
How is your experience with Linux? I was using mintos for a bit and notice a much better experience though it take a little longer to get in and my latency was a smudge higher.
The drive with mintos pooped itself and I haven’t gotten around to reinstalling it on the new drive
Sorry, been playing DF and not checking the forums.
I ended up with a i5-13600k and an RX6800XT.
My i5-7400 and GtX 1660S are showing their age with ultra settings on 1080p in Valdrakken.

Nice, you’ll really enjoy that. The 6800XT is especially a great value these days. It outperforms my 3080 most of the time and uses less power while doing it.

For sure. I’m mainly limiting recommendation to WoW and price point. If it’s for other games then definitely something higher.
Lutris and Lubuntu worked smooth as silk out of the box on a laptop. I haven’t played much. The few hours worked fine without any issues.
I’m probably going to shift the 13700k to my wife (she is on an aging 9900k, although it’s still plenty competent for most things) and grab myself an AM5 3D chip next year.
