12 Years of Farming

Dear Blizzard,

I am writing this on behalf of my wife, and every other player and significant other of players that have literally spent YEARS (In my wife’s case…12 years) farming for the Headless Horseman’s Mount.

I get that it’s random. I get that it’s SUPPOSED TO BE RARE…But I also go to bed next to a woman who is a teacher, a mother to an autistic son, and a wife to a disabled husband. She isn’t the 1% Mythic Raider…She doesn’t even have time to raid current content. She doesn’t even have time to run Mythic+. But she does log in 3-4 times a week to level alts, go after the random old content and achievements. And she LOVES the almost monthly holiday events, PARTICULARLY Hallows End.

Honestly, my wife wouldn’t even have started playing World of Warcraft if it hadn’t been for me sitting her down in 2007 or 2008 on my account in front of a Blood Elf Warlock and her absolutely falling in love with the game. She wanted to name her character Cinderella as it’s her favorite Disney movie…but of course that was taken, and after multiple spellings and changes later we settled onto Kilrogg - US and Synnderella came to be. And when Hallows End rolled around the first time for her, and she first saw the Headless Horseman’s mount…she just HAD TO HAVE IT! So we went for it…

At first with our Guild…before the current system was invented and a Group of 5 could re-run the instance 5 times and have a chance at the mount each time. That first year, she only had the one character…and she watched…day after day, pull after pull…as other guild members won the mount. And the only thing she ever said to any of them was “CONGRATULATIONS!” She doesn’t even know that I am writing this now. Day after day…as her attempts ran out…she never got frustrated. Never gave up. Year after year the mount would fail to drop for her…and she still soldiered on saying that there is always next year.

Well now it is 2020…12 yeas since she first sat down with her first character…And now she has 8 level 50 characters, and 4 more level 45 characters that can all get a chance at the Loot Filled Pumpkin…

This teacher now struggles daily trying to stay within new guidelines and new technologies that were thrown on her due to COVID-19. She has to adapt daily for our 11 year old autistic son (A boy that she fed in one hand and ran Lich King Dungeons with the other on the mouse and her feet on the keyboard) that doesn’t understand why he can’t go to school and see his friends…but she marshals all the strength she can muster to get him to soldier on each day. And on top of all of that she has me…who she never knows if I will need to be rushed to the hospital due to my own disabilities. And still she logs into WoW and does her best to keep a smile on her face. And for the first time this year…our Son has his own account and has 3 characters that he can use to try for the mount…and it broke my heart when he told his Mom that if the Mount dropped for him that he would give it to her…I had to explain how BoP and BoE and the Loot Bags worked to an Autistic Boy that just wants to make his mother happy.

But I hear her cry at night. I see the disappointment each time the bag drops…with nothing but Tricky Treats and a stupid Gnome mask inside. If I could buy this off the Auction House for her…I would have farmed the gold a LONG TIME AGO. We hear the term “Whale” thrown around alot…meaning the player that will not only spend the $15 in monthly charges, but also pay for Transmogs, and Mounts from the in game Cash Shop…well that’s my wife. She doesn’t get the time to get AotC, or to win enough PvP to qualify for a Vicious Saddle. But every now and then I will surprise her with a mount or pet from the store. For her birthday one year, I farmed up a pretty wicked green transmog set for Synnderella.

I know that this story won’t get her any special treatment…and that’s not what I am looking for. I only write this to say…this particular mount…this particular skin is over a decade old. Isn’t it time to maybe up the drop rate? Maybe make it purchasable with Tricky Treats and update the model of the one that drops from the bag to something new?

I disappoint my wife daily…but every now and then this game allows her to forget the troubles of the real world and relax as she sends Chaos Bolts into her enemies. It would be nice if the game itself would recognize how much she loves this game, loves Azeroth…and loves Synnderella.

Not gonna lie, I only read like the first 2 paragraphs and stopped but as someone who farmed this mount every year since it was put in-game, I can honestly tell you this:

She will hate Hallow’s End once she loots it. It’s empty after that. You can’t chase that high again.

I am sorry to hear your wife hasn’t had the mount drop. I agree it seems to have a very tiny chance, which is made worse by the fact that the event only occurs once a year.

When we go after world boss mounts or raid mounts we can do those repeatedly, week after week. But these event mounts can be torturous. It’s a bit the same for me and the love rocket. All these years and it’s never dropped for me.

I hope Blizzard listens to you. I hope all those who have been trying for so long are listened to because it’s time gated in a severe way and needs to be more available than it is.

What’s worse is when a purple drops from the bag, and you get that quick high…just to be let down and see that it’s another Hallowed Helm or Sinister Slicer…

How many times? The number of years doesn’t matter, if it was only 1 time each year. But I’m sure it was more.

I wanted the wheel mount, which was a rare drop from Rustfeather. It finally dropped on my 515th kill. That’s a lot of kills for a drop.

I have 250 kills this year alone, farming it since 2010.

I know her pain. I think this event started back in lich king, I remember farming every year for it and with multiple alts and not getting it. (Same with the brewfest kodo which finally dropped this year for me) It sucked but finally it dropped last year and a huge weight got off my shoulder. I get it you want mounts to be rare but 12 years blizzard… Come on now… especially when it multiple people having the same issue.

Damn, I gotta say, this is rather excellent stuff.
9/10 trolling for you, good bit obvious at points—but the enjoyment factor of it remained high.

been farming it since it released on 10+ toons every season, i finally got it this week, have hope it will come, just takes way more effort than it’s worth

Tbh theres no point being upset about the mount. I have it and maybe only ride it on an alt I hardly touch. I’m still hunting the pink rocket since BC but I’m not gonna cry or lay awake at night over those pixels…i think if anyones that heavily emotionally attached to a game…its time for a vacation.

My only suggestion to you, as someone who started farming the mount about 10 years ago, is to go at it with an army of alts. I didn’t have many toons in previous years, but since the start of BfA I’ve expanded my choices to 16 max lvl toons. I farmed the dungeon every day on all of them this year, and it finally dropped for me today with just 3 days remaining before the event ends. More alts to farm = that many more chances for it to drop. Best of luck to you.

I’m the same. I’ve had the Hallows mount for years and never touch it. Now if I had that pink rocket I’d be using it all time.

I finally got that one this year, I think. I used it maybe twice on a gnome.

Off-topic, but I use to see you like, nightly at Rustfeather’s spawn point in Mechagon. Did you ever get that mount? :slight_smile:

Curse that stupid bird and that lousy mount it has. lol

Still nothing. However since the latest patch I’ve hardly been back. Not sure about anyone else but in game chat channels aren’t werking. No trade or zone chat. That, and Rustfeather is hard to solo now since the squish I’ve sorta lost interest.

Seems a bit overly dramatic over an outdated ugly pixelized mount.
