11 Million Players Strong

https ://ibb.co/yQkLP4W - (I put a space after https, since I can’t post links)

Saw this on GW2 website while surfing the web. Interesting… then again I know it’s a F2P game (not a bad thing) but makes me wonder how exactly they track their players. Still a huge amount regardless, goes to show there are options for players out there and not every MMO is exactly dead.

i dont like gw2 graphics and combat.

I was thinking of trying it but I’m still on the fence.

f2p mmos tend to count inactive accounts in their player counts, I wouldn’t put too much stock in that 11mil number.

EDIT: that said, it is still supposed to be one of the bigger mmos out there, along with ff14 and eso.

Agreed, it’s important to note that the “11 million players” is a tally of all accounts created in the last five years, and the game has been free since 2015.

Anyhow, it’s an okay game. The PVP was neat and felt like a larger, persistent Wintergrasp in a lot of ways. Last time I played GW2 I found the scaling really frustrating, though. Felt like I couldn’t really go anywhere on my own.

Movement is weird. I feel like I’m on ice skates all the time.

Also, no tank/healer/DPS trinity makes everything essentially a scenario or Island Expedition, which I am not a huge fan of.

But it is free, so sure, try it and see what you think.

Edit: sorry, I’m not sure if my stats are accurate, I did a search for the 11 million players thing and found a bunch of articles from 2017, where they were celebrating the same number based on five years of new accounts.

Whatever company makes the next great MMO, one that isn’t made by a bunch of guys who grew up gaming ages ago and come at gaming one particular way? That company could shatter the 12 million player mark.

Because people WANT to play together.

Can almost guarantee you that it is 11 million for whatever reason they decided and because it is free. Just another advertising stunt to get more players, because give a month and they can say “We have had 2 million sign up over the last month” to try and get more players to sign up.

No company will ever tell you the truth about how many active accounts they have.

For comparison purposes, during their 10-year retrospective, Blizzard mentioned that WoW had had 100 million unique accounts over its lifespan.

Cant say for sure as I havnt seen anything on it. But it probably is counted
the same way a lot of online games today count players.
That is they are counting total accounts that were ever made throughout
the life of the game.

The only part that would interest me (RvRvR) is a staggeringly bad slideshow.

Yep. That game is mildly popular but there’s no way in hell they have 11 million active players. It’s just an impressive number they use in marketing ploys.

I enjoy ESO and lore of the game as well as FF14. I try various mmorpg games and hear some things like their mount system is awesome. Then I hear other things about how the game play is not as good.
Personally, I would like a new mmorpg that is similar to eso character build of pick whatever build you want (similar to WoW previous tree), add iin pick whatever weapon you want, whatever gear you want, add in quests like WoW, WoW dungeons and raids, graphics like ff14 and housing similar wildstar/eso and sliders for about just every kind character you can think of or find in these games or in star wars(had to get that in there). Also make it so each day was different(forgot what they call it, live universe). Idk
Universe is calling, and we need to help the old gods. :joy:

GW2 is an amazing game. Played it for a long while, so I’ll give you some Pros and Cons compared to WoW. (Played wow since Vanilla, and played GW2 since release, both with some breaks)

  • in GW2 Graphics and environment are insane, every location is mesmerizing. Can’t blame WoW on this since WoW is much older.
  • Fighting system in GW2 is not a trinity system (Tank, Healer, DPS). Every class / build can do everything to a certain degree.
  • PVP gear is structured (unified), basically, if you are a lvl 1 character, and enter a PVP match, you are boosted to the highest level. and your gear will be a default set of gear that all other players will be wearing.
  • Fighting is different, you have 2 sets of spells, first 5 are attached to your weapon, if you swap your weapon (possible in fight) your spells change with it. The 2nd set of spells are static, they are your Profession’s (Class’s) spells, you get to decide what build you go with and decide your favorite spells. and then lastly you have an ultimate (which also is dependent on your class).
  • WvWvW is World vs World vs World, basically an ongoing battleground that lasts a week where 3 servers fight each other. There are 4 different maps for WvWvW, 3 home lands (1 for each server - red, green, blue) and the central battleground, there aren’t many instances of the same BG like WoW, (in WoW there are for example 4 different AV bgs running at the same time) that’s not the case in GW2. there is only one instance of each map, and I think the limit is 200 players per server, so it’s very common to see 200vs200vs200 fights. (your graphics card will hate you).
  • WvWvW used to benefit the PVE world too, not sure if thats the case now.
  • in WvWvW you fight 2 other servers in the same bracket (rating) as you, if you keep on winning every week, you change brackets and go with other servers.
  • WoW has Horde vs Alliance, GW2 doesn’t have that, it’s just 1 faction that is made of 5 races.
  • GW2’s lore pales compared to WoW, WoW has such a deep lore, GW2 lore is way too young, there are many characters, and great stories, but doesn’t come close to the Warcraft universe. (but blizz is fixing this rapidly)
  • Customization in GW2 is superior to WoW. You can dye armor, hair, eyes, and customize your character’s face / height etc…
  • GW2 has an ingame store, not Pay to Win. the stuff they sell are only cosmetics and things like endless pickaxe (for mining you need a pickaxe, your pickaxe breaks after 100 uses, buying a new one is cheap, and available at regular vendors, but if you like to have an unbreaking tools, it’s possible from the Gemstore)
  • Gemstore gems are purchasable in two ways, real money or ingame gold, you can convert ingame gold to gems and vice versa.
  • Economy in GW2 is superior to WoW, the market is not inflated, the prices aren’t super crazy. having 50g means you are doing well.
  • in GW2 Legendary weapons are mostly for looks, yes you can change the “runes” on them when out of combat, but they have the same stats as easily obtainable other gear.
  • WoW has a gear tread mill, where if you take a break from the game for 1 year, your gear is outdated. That’s not the case in GW2. Your gear is not the endgame.
  • Guild halls in GW2, they get boring fast though if the guild is not active.
  • GW2 has World events and world bosses, can be interesting the first few times, then it becomes meh.
  • GW2 has an Auction House like WoW. it works a bit differently since in GW2 the auction house takes.
  • WoW has more dungeons and raids, GW2 vanilla had dungeons, they dropped it for some reason. GW2 vanilla didn’t have raids, they do have some raids now. I find GW2 raids harder that WoW’s cause of the dodging skill (your character has stamina that can be used to dodge most attacks, which is a big part of the fighting system, think of Dark Souls for starters. )

sorry for the long post, if you need more info, let me know

For comparison purposes, during their 10-year retrospective, Blizzard mentioned that WoW had had 100 million unique accounts over its lifespan.

…and is now lucky if it has 1 / 100th of them left.

Maybe the lesson here is how to KEEP players.

Not lose them.

To borrow a phrase from a certain “personage:” , I’d call THAT a “red flag”.
