Hi,
I changed monitors from a 60hz 4K monitor to a 144hz 1080p monitor. What I have noticed is the text on npcs, menus, etc. is terrible only in WoW and the fps is generally pretty similar. Granted it goes up to 144fps in some areas however most things like towns, raids, etc. it still drops to around 45-60. Am I missing something? Does wow not like 1080p or something?
I have UI scale off, no addons that change text menus etc.
Strange non the less.
Howdy!
A copy of your Dxdiag would be extremely helpful to us in figuring out what to expect performance wise from your system. Copy and paste the contents of the Dxdiag into your reply, then highlight the text and use the code block icon </>.
I believe 3 main items impact the visual quality of the way names are displayed over NPC’s heads: Anti-Aliasing settings, and resolution (including render scale) which is related to the resolution.
A few call outs:
- Make sure you are using the DirectX12 API: Press (Esc) → System → Advanced → Graphics API → Should be DirectX12, if not switch to this and restart the client.
- Open world vs instances, you may notice a higher FPS in instances but in the Open World depending on what is going on around you, your FPS will likely drop.
- Dropping from 4k to 1080P even with a higher refresh rate will not look as clear visually. You could try ramping up the Render Scale to 200% and adjust anti-Aliasing to off or lower setting to help compensate for the performance hit.
If your goal is to keep 144FPS as often as possible you may need to lower your settings, I would start with view distance then try Anti-aliasing and move to the rest of the settings. https://www.logicalincrements.com/games/wow Has a pretty detailed guide, it’s a little out dated by not by much at all.
Thanks!
