It was mentioned earlier in Newcomer Chat by someone that Blizzard is changing the way new players can level up their first character - so that they can access chromie time rather than be tied into the starter zone-BfA route.
Can anyone tell me if that is true? And if so, where it is mentioned as coming?
Yeah, I’m not reading anything that indicates a change to the New Player system of having to do Exiles Reach and then go on to BfA. It all seems merely changes to how non-new players are choosing where to leavel and how it works as a general system.
I think the person who spoke about it misread it all because I certainly haven’t heard of any change to the New Player route of Exiles Reach-BfA etc.
I hate Exile’s Reach because the voice lines are on the effects track for no reason. This should not be where new players are put, it is so badly made lol
Can’t say for sure as my account is surely not tagged as new, but on the PTR the BfA expac is given as an option when you choose your Chromie Time, so it would seem possible that BfA is no longer a forced default for new players.
New players not even having access to Chromie Time options at all could be seen as a “restriction”, so perhaps this dev note may be referring to new player treatment.
I think if it was for new players it would say something like “have been removed for new players”. It would be a fairly major change, especially regarding their attitude towards how new players are introduced to the game.
“Chromie Time expansion restrictions have been removed” is somewhat puzzling. The previous “expansion restriction” was that BFA was not included, so now it is presumbably included as an expansion choice when you choose chromie time. If you don’t have chromie time set, you get default scaling for zones. However, BFA was fully scaled before, and new players were put in that zone. Old players were not put in BFA automatically, but it was still fully scaled for them. I assume that BFA will not be fully scaled for older players. But the situation for new players is still ambigious, and they could fall under different rules than older players. Do they still have to complete BFA before turning on chromie time? I don’t know. I think they should just start out in vanilla starting zones and be told about chromie time when they reach level 10, but that’s just how I would do it. Don’t know how Blizzard plans to do it.
It was a natural transition. They created Exile’s Reach with the same type of graphics and tech that BfA had, so they wanted the gameplay transition to be smooth.
There’s nothing wrong with BfA questing. The zones were fine.
The dungeons are the issue for low level players, due to the mechanics being meant for high level talents, whereas low level characters have like two buttons.
I’ve been playing wow since its original release in 04. Now that my son is in his teens i introduced him to WoW, i will say the new player exp is rough compared to older times. (I know, times change) So far i’ve created a character to level along side him so that i can help him learn but at the same time i dont want to be TOO involved because i want to give him the chance to learn the basics. The weirdest thing to me is that it tries to pull new players in all these different directions and given that he has ADHD he has a hard time focusing and at times can become increasingly discouraged… So instead of all of that, i pretty much guided him towards the original methods… For example, as taurens we leveled in mulgore. At level 10 we moved towards the Northern Barrens. We’re not really doing a ton of dungeons right now, just quests. I have noticed however that if we were to que for dungeons, it would be BFA. Given our levels, why arent we able to q for say RFC or WC?
This is the “new players need to have a structured experienced through BFA” philosophy that I don’t not agree with. I think a new player would find the game simpler if they started out in a vanilla zone with default scaling. You automatically get the vanilla dungeons. Many people will defend the choice of BFA because it is more modern, but just starting in the vanilla zones with default scaling would be easier for the new player to understand, in my opinion. Give them a breadcrumb for chromie time at say level ten, with the option to turn it on or even leave it until later. A new player might like the idea of progressing from one expansion to the next. It was one of things that helped the game make sense when I started.
I would be all for letting new players choose their own experience, but the “changes” listed are far too vague to really tell if that is what they meant by it or not. Here’s hoping either way.
I think that’s really cool you’re playing with your teenage son.
I got my younger cousin into WoW back in Cataclysm, so I empathize with balancing wanting to help with wanting to let em learn the basics on their own.
But yeah I can imagine the game is a bit daunting to new players now, given all of the expansions that have come and gone.
