1 Solution for RTX enabling

Like many of you, I have been unable to rectify the problem behind RTX enabling, until today. This may not work for everyone, but it is what worked for me.

I have the latest Win10 version (build 19041.572) and (supposedly) the latest graphics driver for my 2080Ti; listed as version 26.21.14.3200 on my machine but otherwise listed as 440.97 on Nvidia’s site. After some research, I discovered that 26.21.14.3200 is NOT the latest graphics driver version for my card but that it is the default driver provided by Microsoft. The driver I want is 27.21.14.5671 or otherwise known as 456.71 by Nvidia.

Even after completely uninstalling all graphics drivers using DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) and attempting to reinstall the driver through device manager, I still got 440.97 instead of the desired version.

At this point I knew I needed to install Nvidia’s GeForce Experience. I’ve never liked this piece of software much as I consider it to be mere bloatware. Alas, I installed it anyway and used DDU again to remove all graphics drivers, although I don’t believe DDU was necessary at this point and using the device manger is just as effective.

After firing up GeForce Experience, it identified the missing driver and proceeded to install the proper version of 27.21.14.5671 (a.k.a. 456.71) instead of the default version provided by Microsoft for Windows 10. I am now able to use the RTX features with no issues but with 10-15 fps loss at max settings.

Maybe someone else here knows of another tool or method to use to get the same results that doesn’t involve using GeForce Experience.

The one thing you didn’t list doing was disconnecting your computer from the internet. If you don’t do this then as soon as DDU gets done Windows will instantly download and install the driver from Windows Update.

You don’t need to use GeForce Experience; I don’t. I get my drivers directly from nVidia’s web site:

Do a custom install & tell it not to install GeForce Experience. I don’t have a problem with WIndows trying to replace the drivers.

I tried manually doing it via downloading the drivers directly from nvidia but it would not install no matter what, even with all previous drivers removed and a fresh restart. I’m not sure why.
