“Ranged” Hunter

Why is it that ranged hunters are absurdly low in DPS at the moment? Also, why is it only considered “ranged” and not Beast Mastery or Marksman? The only pure damage class in SoD has 2 of its 3 specs under-performing and melee is going crazy with a 4 button skill set?
Like what is actually happening right now.

Not to mention that Marksman hasn’t really got any changes that make it a stand out spec of its own. I would love to see Survival melee hunters, mobile ranged Beast Mastery hunters, and big damage stationary ranged Marksman. Even post Lone Wolf changes, Marksman still doesn’t have a chance to be anywhere near the damage of other casters.

Realistically to maximize your damage you have to melee weave which defeats the purpose of the spec, especially with Aimed Shot being a 3 second cast, Sniper Training requiring you to stand still for 6 seconds for your extra crit, Lone Wolf hardly convincing anyone to slot it over Heart of the Lion and sacrificing a pet in the process (which is normally the same 30% of your DPS that Lone Wolf would give you MINUS 20% extra stats from dropping Lion) it just isn’t making any sense.

You can’t even find Marksman guides or builds online at the moment because it really just doesn’t exist to anyone. Can we not get some form of procs for instant cast or haste for aimed shots? If not why aren’t we being given a supplemental amount of damage for having to pre-plan positioning by 6 seconds in order to get off an Aimed Shot with Sniper Training… it just feels so lack luster compared to all of the other changes that were given to other classes…

I hope there is plans to make Marksman more Viable, Enjoyable, and noticed as it’s own spec, instead of classified as “ranged” which really means Beast Mastery in 99% of cases. Anyways, I hope to hear some good responses, or see some developer insight, comments, or changes to Marksman so that it doesn’t feel left in the shadows. - A Marksman Hunter main, 20 years in the making.

I agree with u

I was playing “ranged” hunter, but I dropped it on p2 for a Rogue, which only’s purpose is to kick thx to Gnomeran mechanics.

Hunters runes on p2 are a literally nerf to the class.

I’m really considering taking a break from the game, these changes making ur class crap in the middle of the experience isnt my cup of tea. And 2 months of this? Hmmm…

I feel pretty disappointed that my main got screwed and is now a melee with 2 buttons, even if its top dps. I didnt roll Hunter for that, clearly. I would prefer to use a Rogue, but rogues are lame on PVE raid and PVP event.
The only fun are BG and wpvp… guess what? same than classic wow

I feel they added too much to the wrong path.
too much crafting, too much questing, too much preparing and crap, and not really endgame content that levels us all together

What is a ranged hunter? Pretty sure they only have a pet spec and a melee spec.

Marks sucks because Blizzard did nothing to change them between vanilla and SOD. The only real rotational change is the addition of chimera shot, which does little to nothing to change scaling issues.

They also didn’t remove autoshot clipping, which means they’re dependant on slow weapons that don’t even exist yet.

Maybe they want us to wait 6 months for BWL for marks to be viable?

Because apparently SoD is about playing the new way only, and the old style of playing most classes has been dropped like a sack of potatoes.

As much as I enjoy the new stuff, they should’ve supplemented old playstyles too.

Marksman suffers primarily because it just has no damaging abilities. Aimed shot at a 3 second cast is an eternity in this meta and impossible to use. Multishot is mediocre. Chimera shot barely does 200 damage, requires 2 globals, and is on a 6 second cooldown. Steady shot does like 100 damage with a cast time.

Adding in more rune power for marksman will buff beast mastery and marksman builds which I think after phase 1 they’re hesitant to do because the player base loses their minds when they die to a hunter, meanwhile mages are doing 2.5k on an instant cast and no one cares. Most of the marksman runes are unusable in their slot, or just really bad in general.

  • Serpent spread is trash, because serpent sting is trash
  • Chimera shot is extremely under tuned
  • Sniper Training is unusable, gets zero up time
  • Master marksman doesn’t compete with lion or lone wolf
  • Steady shot is extremely under tuned, and it’s an unfun play style
  • Trapper doesn’t give fire traps scaling damage

You will remain a joke until you get xbow of smiting and you will like it!

Anyone remember the 15+ nerfs range hunter received in phase 1? Anyone remember people saying how poorly hunter scaled and how badly those nerfs would impact ranged hunter after phase 1? Pepperidge Farm remembers…

Quick to nerf slow to buff. Marksman might be viable by the time Naxx is out.

Designing fights with lots of required mobility has zero compatibility with a spec designed to turret. There is a design incompatibility issue with how they are designing raids which is clashing with the old design philosophy. 3 sec cast on Aimed Shot for meh damage isn’t worth it over buffed pet scaling or survival melee having zero down side spamming 2 buttons. High armor bosses also is not helping.

There are three things they could change today that would significantly help. Make traps and stings scale with RAP instead of SP. Move lone wolf to legs. Make Heart of the Lion a book instead of a rune so that ranged can actually take advantage of the chest runes.

You nailed it.

One thing I thought going into SoD, they would add cool new abilities that enhance problem areas for each spec, but for some reason instead of making these new changes feel like they could fit in with the original vanillna design they made it so that the new buttons are almost exclusively superior to all old buttons.

But then they also throw in garbage like earth shield and lifebloom that are undertuned and it makes you wonder if they have any idea what they’re doing at all

It might be viable for gnomer by the time naxx is out.

Wont be viable for naxx though.

BM is equally bad.
It’s just the big list of nerfs from P1 taking effect and no powerful new runes.
Plus ranged weapon scaling is pretty bad.

Fixing ranged hunter

Sniper training reworked
-increases your ranged critical strike damage by 10% per 10y away from the target. So at 40y crits deal 40% more damage

Steady shot damage increased to 100% weapon damage and increases your ranged critical strike chance by 5% until you move, stacking up to 3 times

Trap launcher now causes fire traps to scale with rap 75% for immolation. 30% for explosive.

Chimera shot also causes serpent sting to gain 25% rap to its total damage.

Trueshot aura now also increases the hunters ranged attack power by 10%.

Getting some nice 2.8 bows would be nice too.

Because the devs think it’s better class design to press 1 button and be at the top of the meters.

MM could do with some rune changes.

Lone wolf being moved from chest to legs would be a good change. Maybe a rune effecting aimshot cast time would also be good. So far it is pretty much at the bottom of the dps charts.

I dont see MM being good for a while, its just BM all over again untill maybe prebis gear or a huge nerf just like phase 1. Little bit annoyed at the lack of tuning for hunters.

I actually like all of your suggestions. I also think lone wolf being moved from chest to legs would be pretty big. MM does feel a bit scuffed design wise, however i still like it and enjoy playing it but it is scuffed.

Please use our official name, ‘scuffed warrior’ class.
Yeah I hope this is the last phase of ‘all your runes/pvp rewards in one basket’ nonsense. It feels like hunters are forced into melee.

Also running a pet in the stv event is unbelievably bad. It doesn’t res with you and you cant res it unless you find a hole to hide in while you slowly res, heal and feed it. I can’t believe they havent done bg pet res yet.
