Unfortunately I’m not 11 years old so no, i don’t think having a pirate styled theme was ever a good choice…
Arg matey. No, i don’t want to play as a pirate.
The naming of “outlaw” is one thing but the actual pirate styled class/skills are completely alienating for those who are not fans of Pirates of the Caribbean
Honestly, because of this cringey pirate style concept, i dropped combat rogue as a spec when outlaw was introduced and rerolled assassination
Has Activision forgotten what it means to be rogue? What kind of correlation do pirates have with a stealth style spec?
i’m not sure what strain you have to smoke to remove something that was already fitting… i.e. Combat rogue, which completely got the idea across that it was a more toe-to-toe combat style rogue spec. But these devs went the unnecessary extra mile to replace it with something so unattractive and specific to a certain niche… why?
Assassination and subtlety speak for themselves. Their themes of poison and stealth are reflective of each of their play styles. Outlaw and this pirate junk stick out like a sore thumb…
Message for the invertebrates at Activision - please redesign this spec. you can continue to call it outlaw, but please remove the pirate themed “swashbuckling” garbage - this is in no way attractive to anyone nor as anyone in the history of World of Warcraft said “i want to play as a pirate”.

While there are a lot of assumptions in this post about what players do and do not want, I see your point. The outlaw “fantasy”/archetype is pretty versatile in the real world and certainly isn’t limited to just the pirate niche (though pirates certainly fit the niche). The decision was made as part of Legion spec redesigns to give the Combat spec something that separated it from “default rogue that prefers combat over stealth”. In the WoW universe, pirates were already a common part of the lore (Booty Bay and its surrounding lore in particular), so having the Outlaw spec gravitate around the pirate theme felt pretty natural.
Off the top of my head, WoW lore doesn’t really have a group of “good guys that don’t care about the law” outside of some “good” pirates. Sure, the Ravenholdt group might qualify, but they’re far more about stealth and secrecy than they are open combat.

Outlaw is no longer pirate themed. They pretty much removed that in BfA with all the ability re-naming.
Outlaw is more just ‘Fury Rogue’ now. A sorta front-line, rugged scoundrel who can also do a bit of sneak if needed.

Class hasn’t been pirate oriented in 2 years now, it’s pretty much themed around a general Outlaw aesthetic.
Your hatred for pirates is definitely cringe, you’re acting like your class has silly pirate quotes every time an ability is pressed. Even when it was themed around pirates the most in Legion it was pretty generalized and only loosed connected.
This is the quickest and most efficient way to lose any interest people may have had in the point you were trying to make, even more so if any Devs happen to be reading this. Stop projecting your own opinion as though everyone shares and agrees with it. For all you know, you may be in the minority, this is increasingly likely as you don’t see many posts on this subject, even from the usually vocal minority.

Great post and you are a valued member of the WoW and Rogue community. +1
Let me add that Blizz should have gone all in with the pirate theme or completely remove it. Right now it is still stuck half way in as a pirate theme and it feels bad!

I stopped playing Combat also because I don’t like the animations, it is really depressing logging on my rogue and the one spec that everyone in the game loved since classic is completely destroyed.
They should revert Outlaw to Combat and bring back burst of speed.

I think it’s great. In fact I think my character should go YARRR when I hit Adrenaline Rush, the same way he did with Curse of the Dreadblades during Legion. I always liked the obnoxious, far-reaching animations of Brewmaster monk. Outlaw sort of has that and it feels good - there’s a finesse to it.
Don’t forget to prepurchase Shadowlands so you can play some pirate rogue later this year. See you then Captain Cringe.

Like I said in that idiot Vanillanoobs thread.
The word Outlaw does not necessarily mean Pirate. Pirates are outlaws but Outlaws aren’t all pirates. None of our abilities even hint at it other than maybe Hook Shot.
out·law
/ˈoutˌlô/ noun
- a person who has broken the law, especially one who remains at large or is a fugitive.
Synonyms with Outlaw = outcast, exile, pariah, bandit, desperado, brigand, robber, criminal, black hat, Highwayman, etc.
Can you specialise in “Outlaw”? No.
All other specialisations are actual specialisations; Retribution, Assassination, a school of magic, etc. I can only think of the monk specs that are remotely similar but I don’t think those are particularly good names either.
Pirate theme was too specific and yes they’ve already moved away from it. “Outlaw” however isn’t a specialisation. Combat is.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. The “pirate” theme should of been an OPTIONAL style that a Combat rogue could spec further into by way of Talents and Glyphs.
Because, actually, there is a certain percentage of players who DO like the Pirate aesthetic, and always have been since classic when you could do the Bloodsail Buccaneer/Booty Bay quests and even get that transmog.
But not everyone does and shouldn’t be forced to play that role if they’re not into it.
Slice and Dice should of been Baseline and RtB should of been an optional talent that replaces it.
Between the Eyes should of been a talent that replaces Cheap Shot that would of made it into a ranged stun.
We should of been allowed to keep Curse of the Dreadblades, like most other classes got to keep their Legion Artifact abilities, as a final talent.

No thank you, burst of speed caused some massive balance issues. While it was fun to use it took away fun for every single person that had to face a Rogue.
I don’t know how many times you have to keep telling people to stop projecting their opinion as fact, you have no idea how many people like Outlaw more than Combat or even rerolled their class just to play it. If every single person hates it and believes it was ‘destroyed’ as you claim then Blizzard would take action, this is clearly not the case.
Combat was a very one-dimensional spec that didnt’t fit well with how classes are currently designed, it needed a refresh and Shadowlands is the best iteration I’ve played and I have been a Rogue main for many years.

This alone is such a wrong intro into the post.
I like the idea of Outlaw.
I like the pirate theme, which is only a SMALL part of Outlaw image.
I even have Cap’n Crackers sitting on my shoulder.
And I’m a 25 yo Disc Priest.

Outlaw is tablet pruner’s secret fantasy that tablet pruner wanted to push onto all of us. Not good! No wonder Outlaw and Sub are both hot messes!

Outlaw rogue is an absolute joke of a spec. Goofy aesthetic that might as well be a joke.

Other than the pistol shot animation it’s not really THAT overly piratey…

It’s amazing that you necro’d this thread three years later and it is still a horrible, unplayed, non-raid viable, continually nerfed, bottom-tier spec.

Hard agree. Outlaw sucks.

The yell outlaws make reminds me of wolverine when he was all jacked on taking those adrenaline shots in logan. Then he hacked all those goons up which was sick.

These complaints aren’t even relevant anymore. I don’t understand why this thread was necro’d. Outlaw barely even qualifies as being pirate themed. The only thing left that is sort of pirate-y is roll the bones, which I’m sure plenty of outlaw players would be perfectly happy with being thrown away. Flintlocks are not exclusive to pirates. Remember when all rogues used to be able to equip guns? Guess classic rogue is a pirate now too.
