Does anyone else find it weirdly lame that the Nightborne weren’t given a
more interesting name like the other elf races? I know allied races were meant to be spin offs of the fully fleshed out races, but I still feel there could’ve been a slightly more interesting transition than Night Elves->Nightborne. I kinda thought that if we ever got to play them their official title would remain the “Nightborne” but they could be also called straight up “Drow Elves” or some other kind of cool, one-syllable descriptor.
Idk I guess I just liked the Nightborne enough in Legion to wish them exempt from the problems of the allied race system lol.
I thought about that. But I thought “Dark Elves” still kinda impedes on “Night Elves” even though I know “Drow” means “dark” I still think it has that extra layer lol
Weren’t they the actual Highbornes that didn’t evolve into High/Blood Elves? They should’ve called them Highbourne but I can see why they felt that might be confusing.
I always thought it fit them, because most of them (NPC’s) act like stuck up special snowflakes. It seemed appropriate that they had a “different” name for themselves, ya know?
I find it weird they gave themselves a different name at all before rejoining the world, wouldn’t they still just consider themselves night elves/highborne?
The Nightborne are called Shal’dorei in the Darnassian, and in the Shalassian which means Children of the Night. This is quite common thing among the elven societies, Kal’dorei, Sin’dorei, Quel’dorei, Ren’dorei, Fal’dorei, and etc the names are given by the life style they live, or by the experiences they have had. The name Nightborne is name given name by the non-elven speakers. So I do not see what is the issue?
Because of the accusations by lowborne commoners.
Their name literally means Night elves, but we have Night elves already, the Kaldorei, which are in fact Starborne elves, but in order to have some distinguish among them the name Night born was given.
Exactly, the Shal’dorei are the only elven race which kept the Kaldorei Empire’s traditions, and the culture at its prime trapped in time.
Yet, the Shal’dorei are the image of the Quel’dorei if they would have continues and not be tempted for more greater power. Even during the Kal’dorei Empire, the Highborne were addicted to mana crystals, and addiction to seek more power, it been even mentioned by the Pandaren travelers. The Shal’dorei being trapped in a bubble gave them freedom to practice the arcane that no other mortal beings have reached nor will ever reach.
Mutated ones are the Fal’dorei, the Shal’dorei are the ascended ones, by becoming one with the an arcane.
Also, in the lore, all elves look same with small differences between each other, in game, however, they look like completely new races so the players have racial identity.
Remember Elisande on the gates of Nighthold? How she roasted all other elven races, and how she portrayed herself and her people higher than any other race?
Kaldorei? You disgrace a glorious past, hiding in trees and cloaking yourselves in false piety. You have grown as savage as the trolls that skulk about your forests.
Quel’dorei? You are peasants playing at nobility, all too willing to mingle with lesser races that dilute your bloodline. You are unworthy of the name high elves.
Sin’dorei? Of all the elves, I thought you might understand the choice I made to save my people. Instead, you ally with misfits and monsters.
Each of you has debased your proud lineage. Each of you has forgotten the ancient power that is our birthright.
This is what made the Quel’dorei a Quel’dorei during the Kal’dorei Empire. The noble elves of the Empire considered themselves far greater than the commoner population.
i kinda wish they were reskinned night elves instead of giving us scuffed looking recovering crack addict elves. the npc models look way better than what we got
