“Known gpu issue causes slow startup while shaders are drawn for the first time” every time

I tried contacting tech support, but I was told there are no blizzard employees who read tech support, so it’s only peer support. I’ve gotten 1 “the best you can do is what you already did that didn’t work” response there from peers in the last couple days.

I can play 1 copy of WoW at hundreds of fps. I have 2 accounts and they both function identically when running. I used to be able to play both accounts at once, and barely notice a frame drop on the focus screen.
As of a couple days ago, when I launch my second account, I get an error message that says something like “known gpu issue will cause slow startup while drawing shaders for the first time. This process can take several minutes” and both windows drop to 1fps or less. This happens every single time I open a second window.
Sometimes leaving it sit for 30 minutes will get me up to 10-20 fps and it’s playable, sometimes I’m stuck at sub 1 fps.
I changed my settings to lowest, I disabled addons, I reinstalled 2 older drivers, and fresh installed the newest one again. Googling tells me it’s a radeon issue (which I use nvidia) or it’s a 3rd party (afterburner) issue (which I don’t have any installed).
Forums have proven no help, they don’t offer tech support. Nvidia tech support said they’d get back to me in 24 hours 2-3 days ago. In game ticket got responded to with a generic “try our troubleshooting guide” and closed.
Why is it so infuriating to get an answer to a question?

I’m running a 3070ti, i9 9900k, and 32gb ram (running at proper speed). No bios settings changed. No gpu programs running. Last week it was working the way you’d expect, a few days ago I’m less than 1 fps with no perceived changes to any settings.

Can anyone help me please?

Try tech support channel, they might be better help

I came here from tech support.
They offer no tech support there, weird to name it tech support and not offer any lol.

Blizzard employees don’t look at the tech support column. That’s for peers only. And the suggestion I’ve gotten was “the only thing you can do is the thing you did already that didn’t work” and I really don’t want to accept that as an answer. Everything was fine days ago, what changed?

Probably something in an update on Tuesday I would guess.

The CS forum is also mostly player to player assistance. It is an Information Desk to help folks navigate the ticket system, explain policies, and explain account services. There are Blues here though to ensure correct information is given.

Sadly, there is no Tech Support at all from Blizzard since Microsoft took over and laid people off in Jan 2024. Folks here can also make suggestions, but that is it. The players who are usually giving tech suggestions are in the TS forum where you came from.

You can try other player resources like reddit, or video game related forums. You sound like you have done everything you can already - great list of things you have tried. Not sure what else to even suggest.

Okay so there was an update on Tuesday? I didn’t notice if there was one or not.

I found a suggestion buried somewhere out there from years ago that said to delete my gpu cache, I’m going to try that when I’m home from work I guess, as that’s the only thing I seemingly haven’t tried

Running 2 clients, especially on multiple screens, isn’t supported. So I’m thinking if they run better on one screen it’s card limitation.

No I was running clients (2 accounts) on separate screens easily last week. The non-focus’d screen has less fps, but they alternated running smoothly when I clicked back and fourth between screens (following, looting, whatever)
It’s just been the past few days that suddenly I can’t do that anymore (2 screens or 1)

But it’s not supported and it might cause problems, experience may vary. The card might be overtaxed, overheat, might need more page file and memory.

“Unsupported” means, among other things, “not guaranteed to keep working after an update.” I doubt they would knowingly break this - a lot of people use two instances of the game - but since it’s not supported, testing it before patch is probably low priority.

If in fact an update broke it, you’d need to submit a bug report, which you can do in game or by posting in the bug report forum.

(Technically, nothing is guaranteed to work ever, but supported things are generally intended to keep working and mostly do.)

I’m not sure what you mean by “not supported”

There’s options in my options menu to let me choose which screen I display on, and I can put different screens for different accounts. I’ve been doing it since wrath the first time around. This is the first time I’ve had any issues with my current hardware (back in wrath things weren’t as good, but i could still run 2 accounts at 10fps or so on my setup back then). I was doing it last week, running myself through WC on my alt. You just scroll screen to screen to click focus on that client, loot, disenchant, follow, click back to main screen and keep running.

It’s as of 2-3 days ago it doesn’t work and I’m getting error messages. Also, it seems I’m pretty alone in this issue, judging by the amount of available information and lack of people asking about it around the internet. There’s no way I’m the only person logging 2 accounts in the past 3 days or so

EDIT: it seems to be fixed now.
I think the issue was being caused in my GPUCache folder in the wow directory.
I came home, scan/repair (again), deleted the 3 files to make wow work again (again), I defaulted the entire settings in game, reinstalled all the drivers (again), but this time I deleted the GPUCache folder with the other 3. It seems to run smoothly now
