Not getting a star when purchasing a unit with gold

I had an uncommon Drakkisath at 9/10 stars. I bought a common Drakkisath for 120 Gold. After purchasing it took my 90 gold but I was still 9/10 stars and couldn’t upgrade. I had previously purchased a different common Drakkisath to go from 8/10 to 9/10 stars.

Edit :

Same thing just happened again 2/3 srar rivendare. Bought a baron which indicated i would gain a star. 120 g down the drain
