World Editor: Are you for real?

I have always been super positive about this game, as my posting history says. Even as it seems most selling points have literally been scrapped i still clung to the love I’ve had for this game for the last sixteen years.

But what i’m seeing is behind discouraging.

The world editor is literally the same as Warcraft 3 classic.

Same old non-modular UI, same old microscopic model viewer, same code editor with NO syntax highlighting or linting, campaign editor is broken, no sight of the promised reworked cutscene editor, a broken dialogue editor which does not do anything.

This is literally the world editor from 2002, just with added bugs and broken features.

Are you for real? Less than two months to release and this is the editor you’re working with?

To those who have no idea what i’m talking about and why it is so important, the world editor it is the tool used to build both custom maps but it is also largely used by the developers to create campaigns and melee maps. If, and I sure hope this isn’t the case, this is the actual state of their world editor, of their primary tool, then you can be sure either very few or very bad work has been done on the campaign yet.

I don’t really know what to say.
I guess we should be happy to at least have female death knights to appease the feminists!

I would at least like the classic team to tell us if it’s them we should blame or the upper ranks at Activision slicing the game budget.

They told me to tell you to stop being such a little baby.

I agree. I was quite disappointed - or would have been, if I actually expected anything from the game anymore at this point - but the World Editor is really lacking. I mean I don’t think there is any new features from the World Editor we’ve had since 1.31. It’s basically just a handy tool to take a look at the models now. The map test didn’t even work with any of my existing maps, so it’s kinda hard to try to find bugs and flaws with the Editor regarding Reforged. What’s the point of the beta test, if we can’t test anything?

My man, this guy has a point. The world editor is a huge deal for the livelihood of Warcraft 3. Custom games are arguably the only thing that kept this game even slightly alive for the past 16 years. The world editor is fairly disappointing. It is literally the exact same editor that came out in 2002. I don’t think you understand that a lot of map builders are also developers, not so different from those that work at Blizzard. Sure, they don’t work for the same company, but they have just as much knowledge (or more) of software development. When someone like that criticizes your tools, it should not be disregarded.

I was too a bit shocked when opening the new world editor just to see the same old interface with no noticeable changes, but not having a lot of experience on it means i can only make assumptions.
I would like to have the insight of a content creator on the matter, maybe there are changes we can’t see right away, or at least i hope so, nonetheless right now the world edit is kinda useless since only versus games are playable

There are no sensible changes.

An option was added on map config to input whether It can be played in SD, HD or both, but it is not currently working.
Same for campaigns.

A “dialogue editor” was added in but it is currently only a UI draft, doesnt do anything.

That’s all.

For me the most depressing thing was having no syntax highlight or linting on the code editor. Any competent developer Is forced to script triggers in an external IDE and copy paste it inside.

I understand completely where you are coming from, although there has been some small additions to it, overall it is the same as the original. This is very disappointing as someone who plays many custom games, imo the world editor is more important than the competitive side, like being realistic no one would be still playing the original wc3 if not for the world editor.

most of the editor is what it used to be but, they added a few more options and an unfinished dialogue editor. the map config for choosing HD or SD does work, i tested it myself. if i start my map with SD i get the classic graphics. if i start with HD i get high definition graphics but, only for the 4 races whose HD graphics have been added(himans, orcs, undead, naga).

Did they not promise like proper remodeling tools? And better overhaul with Jass coding, so far it’s been the opposite of it. Okay, the Warcraft 3 reforged lost a lot of good features which were scrapped fine, but i was looking forward to the editor itself and the newer tools, so far it pretty much same pile of garbage with certain tweaks and more bugs, missing the stuff we were promised like actually giving more tools that they talked about in blizzcon 2018 wc3 reforged panel, so far nothing i atleast expected changing the ui a bit around and making it more stylish but no, not even that looks like something outta windows 95 again… Damn, instead of calling it “Warcraft 3 reforged” call it “Warcraft 3 Director’s cut” that seems to be a fitting end to the great series.

They promised a lot of things, now we are not getting the changes we wanted, but are getting the changes we did not want.

Patch 1.31 wouldn’t be a thing without Reforged and it brought enough features: .lua programming language support, new map storage format etc.
I don’t see why would one want UI overhaul of WorldEditor. People got used to it and the editor itself works fine, it only needs some tweaks here and there, and Blizzard already done some. Remember that example about the unit and it’s health?

If you’re not happy about UI for some reason – wait for Hiveworkshop to release their editor. I’m sure they will.

I’d like to first start off by saying the WE’s current situation of having certain bugs and issues and the actual game being less stable is something i’m mostly aware of and i’m very certain Blizzard will be trying to improve and fix all of the known issues. and i will be looking even more forward into helping them do so with however and whenever i can. so should every active Map Maker.

Ofc it is, there is no Reforged World Editor or Classic World Editor. there is only The World Editor and that’s a good thing.

Oh yeah sure, from patch 1.26 to 1.31.1 LITERALLY NOTHING WAS CHANGED AND NO IMPROVEMENT OR FEATURE WAS ADDED.

Here is just the basic 4 things they noted coming with Reforged.

• 1 They’re excited to see what the community does with the improved editor features.
• 2 Some features they’ve mentioned is changing a unit’s health and new camera tools.
• 3 We will get an option to change the 12-unit selection limit in custom games.
• 4 No plans to allow mapmakers to monetize their maps.

1 - MOST LIKELY stating that there are a huge amount of minor updates and tweaks that would just be too long to post and mention one by one.

2 - sounds great to me.

3 - literally the wet dream of every map maker since forever.

4 - And a great news, NO ONE WANTS MONITIZEABLE MAPS, we saw it in sc2, its just bad and it doesn’t work. the wc3 community has survived for all this time because of its completely free and open door structure. so its nice to see blizzard mentioning this is not changing whatsoever.

As for what Improvements and Features did happen from patch 1.29 base until 1.31.1 i do not even care to list it out for you, because just the fact that you made a thread like this and said what you said is enough reason for the average decent map maker with 3+ years of experience to just sit here and laugh at your face.

Go do your research, read older Blizzard patch notes, explore and compare the 2 Editors of patch 1.26 and 1.31.1, and ask around Hive workshop for help in understanding the amount of new things we’ve gotten so far.
And how even when adding some new abilities to the game for melee, they straight up think for the Custom Map Makers when you just open the abilities and see them in the Editor. and that’s just TINY example.

All people like you are good at doing is lying to everyones face and generating likes for negativity.

This is a beta build

You are voluntarily playing an unfinished game, and complaining that it’s not finished.

good point.

“B-but guys it’s just beta”.
Ahahaha.
This is why you don’t preorder idiots.
Cut features is a normal in game development and is the reason why most game developers won’t make any promises until features have been implemented.
Wait until the game is out before purchasing it.
Only then can you make a judgement if it’s worth it or not.

Also, I can see some new camera options in the triggers, which indeed lets you make cutscenes at different angles.

I am glad that the layout stayed the same but some UI tweaks here and there would be more then welcome. And no new features. I at least hoped i could start a custom campaign map from the editor instead of starting the game and select it from the menu.

16 tiles.
Overwritten textures and models paths.

Blizz told us that Reforged will be compatible with Original WC3. This relate to ranked matchmaking only?
Is there even a tiny possibility that we can raise the limit of tile? Or use more than 2 cliff tiles? Currently it’s 16, because of some internal restrictions of the game engine as i remember (that was in 2002).

And moreover there are a lot of models created by the community in past almost 20 years. Huge amount of them looks very nice but afaik some models use default warcraft textures, but now since it (paths or maybe even textures itself) overwritten - it’s just impossible to use them?

if you are referring to tilesets, altering the limit of that would be possible in classic and reforged, because that is not based on assets. they really should increase its limit however.

where to find the editor ?
