Why No Ship Maps?

I had a similar thread a while back on why only certain merc camps and (and thus tilesets) seem to be favoured but there is actually another related question: Why has there never been a PvP map with Goblin Shipyards that took off?

I can understand why maps that lack land based paths to the enemy would be kind of messed up for serious PvP. But it seems like there could have been potential for maps that used Ships instead of Zeppelins to attack from alternate routes or otherwise bypass enemies. And I would be interested to see what Ship micro looked like too.

i am working on one map but, its got additions to the gameplay with hero ships and buildings built on water as well as on land.

Battleships crossfire is a popular shipmap.

Whether or not it would be messed up for ā€œserious PvPā€ depends how it is implemented. For example, I assume air to ground and ranged (if close enough) could damage the ships. I also assume if a ship is destroyed then all units on board drown. Might even have aquatic and/or land/water units.

This game even has Warships as well as transport ships.
And I remember the Naga Sea Witch being able to swim on unreacheable water.

Ship battles were a great thing on WC2
