Obviously the answer is Warcraft came first, more specifically Warcraft III.
The reason I pose this question is because I see a lot of posts talking about all of the new things that could be added to Reforged.
Will they change the story?
Will the models look like WoW characters?
Can we add new races?
Are Jaina’s breasts a big deal?
I want people to remember how we got to this point.
The reason why World of Warcraft and Heroes of the Storm even exist today is because of the huge success of Warcraft III.
I’ve played Warcraft III for 15 years, I played WoW vanilla, BC, Wotlk, Cata, and after while I just stopped because the game I used to love became unrecognizable.
It’s no secret that World of Warcraft is generally seen today as a lesser version of it’s past self. All of the little changes, story changes, quality of life changes, and technical changes that occurred in World of Warcraft really seem to have made it into a worse game.
There’s a reason why Blizzard is making a World of Warcraft Classic game, and it’s because there was so much that was great about the original that even with all the modern updates the new game just doesn’t quite compare.
This is my fear for Warcraft III Reforged, that so much is changed that the game doesn’t compare to it’s legendary origins.
Warcraft III is truly a masterpiece. Looking at any of the old cutscenes it can be hard to tell if they were made 15 years ago vs today.
The art style of Warcraft III is timeless, it serves it’s function so well it’s unmatched by any RTS in my opinion.
The battles are clear, the style is visually appealing to look at and doesn’t strain the eyes, and every single unit has so much character built right into those few polygons.
Before we start changing Warcraft III into something different, I really believe Blizzard needs to focus on faithfully recreating exactly what Warcraft III was. There is so much greatness, depth, character, and flavor to Warcraft III that just replacing the models with medieval SC2 models just won’t cut it.
To anyone who has just jumped on the Warcraft Reforged train without playing the original Warcraft III and The Frozen Throne, play it.
I would encourage you to play the original faithfully. Really dig into it and see what made it so special, and by the end hopefully you’ll recognize that it’s not about if these new HD models “look better” than Warcraft III, it’s about whether the new models represent Warcraft III’s original magic.
Don’t misunderstand, I’m not against any changes to Warcraft III Reforged, but if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Any change that’s made could make the game better, or it could ruin the magic and make the game much worse.
TL;DR Warcraft III is the masterpiece that made other blizzard games like World of Warcraft even possible. Re-create and learn from the masterpiece that is Warcraft III before trying to change it.
