Ive discovered that the lag in WC3 is due to being redirected to servers outside of America, like Amsterdam or London. This causes the ping to spike to over 200 ms even up to 500 ms. Developers please fix this! if we are connecting to the America server, we should only be connecting to servers located in the Americas!
OK so carefully reviewing the situation, it looks to me like the NA proxy servers are simply down, as all custom games have 120+ or 200+ ping even the ones that say USW (they say USW because they connected through that gateway, not based on where the game was created)
The issue we seem to have is the NA proxy servers the system uses to host our games are down, and since they’re down, the game is created on a different one.
This wasn’t the result of a patch or update though, this was just a random/unpredictable event causing server downtime.
What we need to happen is for those servers to be restarted, and then everything should be fine again. A support ticket might be able to achieve this.
-edit-
Update: This is going to sound crazy, but when I wrote the post above, I was seeing high pings for all custom games regardless of location- like you described.
Not more than a few minutes later, I’m seeing games with normal pings, and pings lower than ive seen in a long time, indicating the Chicago server which has been down for a while is also back. So it appears that the servers have been restarted. Feel free, mister meany man, to confirm this.
The problem is that the game keeps switching servers on us, either during a match or between matches. Sometimes we are connected to US servers and everything works fine, but when we are connected to servers outside of America, thats when the delay and lag start. This need to be analizaed for at least a day to draw any conclusions. If its necessary to restart the US servers, then Blizzard and Bnet developers, please do so, as several of us are experiencing this problem in WC3!!!
It’s not that the game is “switching servers on you” it’s rather that they’re creating the game on an available server that is working while another one is down. This is a backup/fallback to ensure it’s still technically possible to play instead of becoming completely disabled.
Are all the US servers down??? thats impossible.
There are only two main servers in the US. One is on the west coast, somewhere in California I think, and the other one is in Chicago. So with only two server locations in the US, it isn’t really that crazy for there to be cases when they’re both down, since it unfortunately seems like they don’t check on them that often.
There are too many servers, Atlanta, Chicago, Illinois, Miami, etc, there are like 20 servers on USA. Try to install software to reduce ping and find a server node.
I don’t know where you’re getting this but the two that I’ve mentioned are the only ones that have ever been officially acknowledged. It was just a few patches ago that the ones in the Oecania region were added, as well. The Chicago server has also been known to go down for considerable periods of time before getting fixed/restarted.
Also the pings I see on custom games back this up. Most games on the same server will have the same or nearly the same ping. And I only ever see two distinct ping ranges on games that are listed as USW. Which means they’re only coming from two server locations.
The biggest gripe of the entire community has been that there isn’t enough server locations.
I think you may be conflating servers used for other battle.net games and services with Warcraft III. Other games, including especially WoW and Overwatch, have their own server infrastructures and have servers in more and different locations than games like Starcraft Remastered and War3R.
