WC3 Classic, no option for 120hz, only 60hz or 144hz?

Hi so I finally bit the bullet and pre-ordered Reforged. It’s my first RTS outside of maybe 10 hours of SC2, so I’m a bit overwhelmed. Anyway, I started up Classic and I noticed that for resolution options in Full Screen, there is no option for “2560x1440@120hz”. I can only choose 60 or 144, even though I have my monitor’s refresh rate at 120hz.

Is there a way around this? I want to play in Full Screen, and Windows 10 has a bug where if your frame rate is not 30/60/120 and you’re playing a video on a second monitor that is 30/60fps, it will cap the game to 60fps as well.

You could try manually set it to 120 with the config file

Ah yes. I tried looking for the config file but could not locate it. Checked Documents and Program Files folders for WC3 and it’s not there.

I decided to look for you.

these ones say it can’t be done

also these people have trouble with *hz

Hmm, thanks. I appreciate the search. I tried Google search but only got very old posts that didn’t apply. Thank you!

Alright so I have a fix. This 60Hz crap made me insta puke…

The trick for me was to run the game in ‘Windowed Fullscreen’ mode. This way it takes over the set desktop resolution and hz.

true, though it is not the optimal solution. maybe it can help me though, as my toshiba runs at 120 hz.

60hz makes you puke? you must have the most sensitive eyes in the universe.

But the thing is, that isn’t even a trick. you should be using borderless window anyway. There’s really no advantage to fullscreen mode and there hasn’t been for a long time. Full screen just makes the game hidden if you tab away. There is virtually no performance benefit.

Actually, it is the optimal solution. There is essentially no advantage whatsoever to fullscreen mode and multiple disadvantages.

The way windows handles full screen applications in modern versions (i.e. 8 and beyond) it really just makes the game hide if you press alt tab. You’ll notice that your monitor doesn’t go black at all like it would have done in earlier versions of windows as it orders a screen mode change. That is becuase it actually does not change screen modes unless you select a different resolution than your monitor’s native resolution- and your native resolution offers the best performance.

Need more proof? With the full screen resolution selected set to the same as your monitor’s native, switch between full screen and fullscreen windowed. There will be no mode change on your monitor like there is when you change screen resolutions or refresh rates.

The only time exclusive fullscreen does anything is when you use a different resolution from the native resolution. Otherwise the game doesn’t care, Windows doesn’t care, your graphics card doesn’t care.
