With a game like Age of Empires 3 Definitive Edition still under active development with more content flowing in and fixes coming by. it just went free and its paid factions are now set on a rotation for the free users.
The base game is 20$.
I no longer think Reforged worth 30 bucks. i mean, not like it was initially, but even now after hotfixes.
And the reason i think so is because if the community is suppose to provide most of the value to the game instead of the people who are responsible for its well being, the least we can expect is a seamless, bugless, smooth running game with a few fan service features done properly like reduced storage. that is a far cry from what we have now.
The game not being so much of an absolute disaster as launch is NOT a healthy standard to qualify it being worth 30bux.
I expect this to be a bit of a controversial topic considering i myself advocate for the longest of time that we the community are essentially whats giving the game ANY value to begin with, otherwise it would be FLAT OUT DED right now.
So, the least we can expect is either another round of bug fixes that dont break the game even more or a price reduction so that more people can play the game.
It would certainly be fair as it stands, but I would probably prefer more active development to attempt to make it worth its current price. Writing a bug report still feels pretty much like throwing it into the void.
As you know I am king of Warcraft 3 modding, and you are one of my most loyal subjects. I want you to know that I have heard your concern, and will take this into consideration.
Here at the Forge, we have been considering taking this game free but selling access to Naga faction in the melee games with a rotation that allows everyone to try Naga on Tuesdays. The Naga faction will feature a town hall that trains melee units, 8x hit point regeneration for all units, and the ability for its units to travel over deep water almost as though they were flying units. Because of this, the Naga faction will be able to wipe the floor with even the current melee pros and we believe the small one-time microtransaction of $15 will be well worth it for those players who wish to really up their melee game!
We have also been considering selling access to Archimonde as a Tavern hero for another $15, for players who want the full Warcraft 3 experience and want to bring the Divine Armor functionality from the campaign live into their melee experience.
So, we believe that by making the game free to play and supporting it through micro transactions like we describe, we may be able to bring Warcraft 3 to an even broader audience for years to come.
“after hotfixes” cracked me up. There never has been a hotfix. Even as per today we still can’t veto maps and there is no functional match making for ladder.
Blizzard should essentially pay us for the massive Q&A that was performed by the community. They could quite literally fire a department as all the groundwork has been done by the community. I know this is not going to happen, but conceptually true none the less.
This game shouldn’t be cheap. It should be free. Nobody should have to pay for a compelled downgrade. At best, it should be axed all together and have legacy reinstated. Because objectively TFT is way way better than reforged. What reforged offers over TFT is disk space occupation.
while I’m not saying they shouldn’t, they would probably rather leverage their battle.net sales, given that War3 is finally being put on sale with other games now.
The thing you call “ladder” might be what was meant by the term “hotfix.” Isn’t that something that wasn’t originally part of the game, thrown in hurriedly only recently?
In the context of reforged, sure; though obviously war3 had a ladder system before the Reforged update (Though it had been planned to return a lot sooner than it actually did)
And while it took well over a year for ranked play to return, it’s kind of a stretch to say it only happened recently at this point. considering we’re in a third season now.
CaptainJack, I’d like to inquire about your consistent defense of the game’s current state. It’s important to address concerns without inadvertently hindering the resolution of existing issues. I’m curious if your advocacy is connected to any form of affiliation with the game’s developers, as this seems to be an ongoing theme in your responses.
The game’s condition appears to be deteriorating. Just recently, a friend named Rubben and I were engaged in a match when, inexplicably, we were unexpectedly ejected from the game, only to find ourselves in an entirely new match. Instances like this are indicative of a dysfunctional system, and it’s perplexing to hear assertions that the game is functioning optimally.
The game’s balance has become increasingly compromised, which is a significant issue that cannot be ignored. Furthermore, the game is plagued by a myriad of bugs that undermine the overall experience. While the developers claim to be working on resolving these problems, the constant defense of the game’s status quo might inadvertently delay any meaningful progress.
The proposed solutions are seemingly straightforward. Collaborating with entities such as Wc3champion and leveraging AI technology to pinpoint the sources of these bugs could significantly expedite the resolution process. However, it is my impression that the lack of financial incentive might be contributing to the stagnation in addressing these concerns. There’s speculation that the developers’ attention has shifted towards an impending sale of Blizzard to Microsoft, which could potentially further delay the resolution of these issues.
In conclusion, I find it puzzling that continued support for the game’s current state persists, despite the mounting evidence of its shortcomings. I urge for a more proactive approach towards rectifying these issues to restore the integrity of the gameplay experience.
Unfortunately, it might be equally as likely that CaptainJack is an agent of some other manipulator as well. For example, there might be an organization that believes that by senselessly praising the current state of the game, they might further increase player frustration so that players would leave Warcraft III and flock to some other game instead.
There are a lot of companies that might have an interest in activities like that. DotA 2 and League of Legends are a few obvious examples; it would be terrible for them if players became convinced that it was possible to move to Reforged to play a DotA type of game, because that would allow those players to essentially get the same experience for little to no cost – if Warcraft III’s systems were working optimally.
So, in a world where there are many other 3rd parties that might have a vested interest in the decline of Activision Blizzard or of the Reforged, I think it is not necessary for someone to be affiliated with this company in order for their praise of it to be non-genuine, or otherwise guided by an unseen motive.
(Edit: Ask yourself; does Activision Blizzard seem like a company that is sufficiently well-coordinated to bother to have paid actors on their forums praising their games?)
I am neither defending nor attacking the game. I simply discuss facts and truths and personal observation. Neither hate nor love. I keep emotion out of the discussion as much as I possibly can, because civilized conversation is better for all.
I haven’t deleted any topic. If anything got deleted, it was done by a moderator, not me.
I am so tired of being accused of working for blizzard. Let me say it again: You could not pay me to work for them. Just because I don’t make threads and posts spurting curse-laden anger directed at Blizzard, doesn’t mean I work for them. Discussions serve no one if they are fueuled by emotion rather than truth and fact. Thus I am always trying to find those things or provide what I at least believe to be those things at all times. You may think that I’m just some perfect angel happy customer or something, and I assure you that is not the case. But becuase I have been in game development before (With Trendy Entertainment/Chromatic Games on the Dungeon Defenders franchise), I know what its like to work on something and have people complain about it without saying or doing anything that could help to see those problems addressed. There is tons of complaining here, but few constructive comments that actually seek to help resolve the game’s issues.
Now, I see a lot of people say t hat “nothing” was done, added or fixed for this game. While it did take WAAAAY too long for anything to even start to happen, and while they certainly seem to be dragging their feet (or not devoting enough resources, your choice) to address the current issues, it is a provable fact that they have both fixed certain things and added certain things, and restored previously removed features. Of course, they’ve also introduced new issues along the way, but we have plenty of topics for those and I’ll be happy to discuss those in their respective threads.
Sorry i forgot to respond to this, i love your response because it sheds light on how blizzard could do things if it had more of its own content, but alas, it doesn’t.
Warcraft 3 has very little value outside of what the community provides. hell half most of its technical features is standing on singular achievements by people (you included) that if it not for, it would’ve been even worse.
