Want to fix balance for real? Fix the horrible replay system

Balance discussion in this game is always sub par because we currently do not have anything that is accurate as far as data collection available to anybody except blizzards internal teams.

There are lots of really good players providing lots of really good data but we can’t access any of it in meaningful ways because you have to simulate the whole freakin’ game AND also know the secret RNG seed blizzard is using to derive literally every single random action in the game in a predetermined way.

Yes - the reason why your creep drops the same item every time you watch the replay is because the game is literally re-playing itself when you watch it.

This is also the reason why you can’t go backwards in replays - the game engine doesn’t know how to “undo” the game it just simulated.

Please add some metadata to the replays that contains information about items and various game interactions that we currently do not have in the file.

It would not break the game or anything in the engine if we just added information into the replay file at the end of the file.

It would not require any specialized coding or inventing of syntax - just use the object ID and item ID properties that already exist for the match if you absolutely have to

We want to build things for Warcraft players and right now the replay files are a huge limitation for everything from balance discussion to people getting better at the game

Well I will respond to the topic title. Replays have nothing to do with game balance. Replays are for learning and review. So the topic title is silly by itself.

As a thought exercise for someone who has posted nearly FIVE THOUSAND times on a forum about warcraft 3 - can you walk me through what you mean by

Replays are for learning and review

Is this kind of like how literally every professional athlete ever watches film and analyzes what they could do better and what they need to work on?

Could we for example look at idk maybe a hundred or possibly a thousand of these matches and determine if there is something in common? I think we have a word for this but maybe someone who has posted FIVE THOUSAND TIMES could help me?

It’s all very silly of me to want something good for this game and expect you to not show up on my post with your absolute low quality drivel but here we are once again <3

Yes? What’s your point? I agree 100%. But what does this have to do with game balance?

The only one posting low quality drivel here is you. You made an obvious statement which I actually agree with, but the problem goes back to the topic title: What does the replay system have to do with game balance? Again: Replays are for learning and review. They don’t fix game balance or have anything to do with it in any way. Looking at replays is a horribly inefficent way of looking at game balance. If only there was a way to like, collect statistical data about the performance of each race and their units. Oh wait, they already do that. Well, at least, War3C does that. I find it hard to believe Blizzard does not collect data for game balance purposes, which you even mention yourself according to the post preview tooltip. Blizzard’s data, combined with our observational power, is plenty enough to produce balance changes and give feedback on them.

I cannot reveal the original post contents without unblocking you (Except for the preview), which I’m not willing to do- I could only see the topic title, which is a statment linking replays with fixing balance. Why did I block you? Because you made statements like the one you made in this post, being personally offensive instead of discussing things in a civilized manner. Thanks for reminding me (and us) what kind of person you are, responding to comments with insults and snark.

You should unblock me - I have good suggestions to help warcraft be better
