with the new larger interface, there is more room. enough for a third resource, something the original interface did not have room for. they could use that to add back mana stones.
As a possibility for custom maps - why not, but not as a core melee gameplay feature.
Yes, optional for custom maps only, not melee/ladders. Would be so much easier tracking of what custom resources you have instead of having to relying on multiboards.
WC2 Resources - Gold, Lumber, Oil, Food
(Oil was for ships, which were hardly ever used in multiplayer)
WC3 Resources - Gold, Lumber, Food, Upkeep
(technically upkeep is a tax, but its an important aspect of resource management)
It would be nice to see oil added into the map maker, but it would require some major overhaul to balance it if they were to add ships to competitive ladder play. Personally I don’t see any need for more resource types outside of custom games
What Resource would you want added, Coal? which units would require that, only the steam engine? or how about Gunpowder, only for humans? Would that require a secondary mining expansion?
Actually in a way, mana is also a resource
Azerite? hahahahah…
Just googled it, obviously its from WoW but I dont know much about it other than something to do with a characters blood? is it a currency though?
Azertite is a plot substance in Battle for Azeroth.
More resources or custom resources would be welcome for the editor, but not ladder or standard game. I would love to see custom maps with oil again.
Yep, a currency. Blood of a titan living inside the planet of Azeroth, coming from beneath the earth in a form of precious mineral. Or something like that. Was introduced in the latest WOW expansion.
JK, because azerite farming in WOW is a painful meme, currently.
My earlier post (about editor):
For melee, if they add naval melee maps it might be worth thinking about how oil could be used for naval things, but if you have a region-specific resource that helps build army for said region then you’ve created a positive feedback loop that could make it hard to come back.
Adding oil to the core melee would be a huge change, although there are places where it could be strategic. If tech needs oil (like it used to), and if you start with a reasonable amount (like you used to), and if it’s extremely difficult to obtain (or sometimes even unavailable), then tech can be limited by oil. This can play out a bit like a game of chicken, where being the first to tech allows your opponent to tech the counter. This can even help make comebacks more possible.
Pretty sure the lack of space wasn’t the reason for 3 resources lol.
I like the idea of a 3rd resource just to open potential for custom maps.
Oil, Azeroth, Manastones, whatever it may be it could be useful.
the lack of space was one reason they removed mana stones. another was that they wanted lumber more. a third was the addition of upkeep. they had to choose. the mana stones icon still exists in the files however. as it is, there is no slot for a third resource. they should add that slot. there is enough space now.
I’d like to see ships and build-able shipyards and stuff return.
Man, I can assure you, nobody ever thought like ‘oh we have to put as many resourses as the screen space allows’, this is not how you make good strategy games. Using 3 resourses was a matter of gameplay design and convenience.
They already used 4 resourses in WC2 and in WC3 resourse windows are very stretched horizontally, in terms of space available they could easily put up to 6 resourses there, if not more. But they didn’t.
It could be a useful thing for custom maps, but that’s it.
It’s not about space. This is W3, not Age of Empires (where you have 4 resources) or Heroes of Magic and Might (6 resources plus gold). Gold and lumber are the equivalent of minerals and gas in SC. Those two BLZ RTS games share the same design philosophy in terms of resources. The difference in W3, though, is heroes and an upkeep tax.
Melee and ladder games don’t need any such drastic changes, but I would love to be able to add extra resources in a custom game! And on the other hand, I’d want to able to remove them as well, if I have a map where only gold is needed.
they could add resource slots and then by default have them empty with normal interface elements blocking them.
Yes, yes and yers - you’re hired kid, campus starts at 12:00 monday, california, your full of ideas and i like your gusto
Could be intersesting to have it in the campaign for speciall units
Gold, Lumber, Food, Experience, Mana, Items, Map Control
WC3 has far more resources and interactivity than other strategy games like starcraft. Harvesting creep camps to earn experience and items for your hero is a form of macro, managing your resources. Gaining map control of neutral buildings and manipulating tree lines is a resource.
There’s no need for another linear statistical resource like gold or lumber. Whats the point of oil? What does it accomplish that the gold/lumber tradeoff doesn’t already do? Experience, items, map control all do something interactive.
