SSAO and Other Graphical Features - Where are They?

It’s 2019, games have had these effects for years. Does blizzard have plans to include the following:

  1. SSAO
  2. Parallax mapping
  3. Depth of field during cutscenes
  4. Volumetric lighting and fog

I would expect these graphical features as a given, but i have not seen any evidence of them.

I’d imagine they introduce most of these kind of modern features, but not much specifics have been revealed. I guess ray tracing is the only confirmed detail about the improved graphics.

If realtime raytracing is used then SSAO is useless since the raytracing calculates proper ambient occlusion instead of having to rely on screen space guesses. Depth of field and volumetric lighting and fog should also be implemented by raytracing. That said I have doubts raytracing will be used for obvious reasons.

Parallax mapping is almost certainly implemented if one looks at the screenshots of reforged. SSAO likely as well, since other modern Blizzard games support it. Depth of field is a simple post process so would likely be implemented if there is a use for it. Volumetric lighting and fog is less useful due to the constant top down perspective and hence is less likely to be implemented as it is less visually impactful.

Volumetric lighting is entirely useful for the campaign - competitive play will remain almost entirely on the SD version at an esports level, so graphically advances are almost irrelevant, in that they will not see pro play.

That’s a pretty bold statement. Why do you think that? Esports is also much about visuals, and I just don’t think people find a 16-year-old game that interesting to watch. The graphical updates will be one of the most important improvements what comes to the game’s popularity. Ever tried to play an old game you haven’t ever played before? Nostalgia has very important role when judging an old game and if Warcraft 3 plans to get into the eSports scenes, there has to be new blood - or else it would be there already.

everybody in korea plays sc2 on low settings - they dont care about graphics or artstyle and everyone who plays wc3 professionally will continue to downgrade the graphics for their inane profession.

For this reason all graphical decisions for reforged should be based on what would improve the visual potential of the campaign and user created maps.

Actualy, high graphic will be used for eSport. But not for players but for observers so aundience can enjoy nice looking game. But I agree that pro players on tournaments will most likely use old graphics they are used to.

Here in African continent people dont play wc3 online, just on lan, with arranged tournaments and nice awards.

Another issue is servers are far away for people who wanted to do so.

Also pro competetive players in Africa do not need new fancy graphic , its irrelevant for gameplay.

And i must say, most of our PC-s tehnical spec are not Reforged friendly.

I rly dont understand Reforged from my african perspective…

But since its coming out, i ask is there dark skinned people in warcraft lore and can they be implemented ?

Cause i never saw black skin humans in wc3 or wow …

Maybe this would drag some old continent and old school players to play Reforged , one who has super internet and pc (kinda rare due to living standard)

Cheers

There are dark skinned humans in the Warcraft universe. At least in WoW there’s a possibility to make your character have dark skin and there are NPCs with dark skin. The different humans races haven’t really been addressed in any way in the Warcraft lore. The humans are descendants of the Vrykul of Northrend, and apparently they evolved to be like Caucasian humans.

There is afro skin character in warcraft lore, that were never created.
Anyway i am not here to argue . Do research man

Yeah, but the only actual African feature is the dark skin. There’s no Asian humans either and I meant that it’s never explained why there is or isn’t other human races and neither it is explained why the humans of Warcraft can have dark skin, even though Vrykul are all white skinned - it wouldn’t be impossible for them to evolve to have dark skin (assuming evolution happens in Warcraft universe somewhat similarly as it does in real world), but my point is that none of this is actually explained anywhere. For example: compare to orcs, their brown, black, green and red skins have quite a lot of lore behind and they are explained how the color changes. For humans, there’s nothing like that. Or please, do share your sources if you have found something, because I haven’t.

About explanation - there is no explanation for evolving, it is true.
But there is female specifically black skin character in lore.

And i cant find it right now by googling, but its wowpedia link, there is 2 appereance of her as a pencil scratch and another as background screen wallpaper.

I forgot here name is something like M.F , rly cant remember but i dont lie or troll now , if i can remember she looked like a girl or tennager - dont get me 100% on this.

Anyway its still mysterious to me and weird.

Maybe its created by blizzard additionally cause someone was wondering and discussions took place why no black people in wow at all.

Who knows, but anyway its real thing xD

What are you talking about? There are black people in Warcraft…

I know, there is no anymore, reason = game cant process them due to lighting bugs, so they have been updated with white people.

And btw i am not black, nor i am here to “defend” or being emotive about this matter.

Its just mysterious and intersting

Well there are still dark-skinned humans, even if they weren’t as black as people can be in real life. But then again, humans of Warcraft also have a (lack of a) lot of other features too. After all, they are not the same humans we are in real life.
