Severe Performance Issues on Live Realm – AMD Hardware

Dear Blizzard Technical Support,

I am writing to report a critical performance issue affecting Warcraft III: Reforged on the live realm, which renders the game nearly unplayable on my otherwise capable system.

System Specifications:

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X
  • GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6600
  • RAM: 16GB DDR4 @ 3200 MHz
  • Operating System: Windows 11 Pro (clean installation)

Despite these more-than-adequate specifications, the live version of the game suffers from severe FPS drops, choppy frame pacing, and frequent stuttering. Frame rates fluctuate between 50 and 120 FPS, but the experience is far from smooth. Strikingly, this problem does not exist when playing on the PTR (Public Test Realm), where I consistently achieve over 350 FPS with smooth and stable performance.

This clear disparity strongly suggests that the issue lies within the live client or server implementation, rather than my hardware or drivers.

Troubleshooting Already Performed:

  • Fresh installation of Warcraft III: Reforged
  • Clean driver installation using AMD Cleanup Utility
  • Updated AMD Adrenalin GPU drivers (latest stable release)
  • Updated motherboard BIOS and AMD chipset drivers
  • All AMD Radeon Software settings left at default
  • Tried both DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 modes at various graphic settings (low to ultra)
  • Disabled all background applications and overlays (Discord, etc.)
  • Confirmed that system temperatures (CPU & GPU) are well within normal limits
  • Disabled VSync (enabling it worsens the issue significantly—even the main menu lags afterward)

I have also thoroughly reviewed the Blizzard Technical Support forums, as well as other online communities. Numerous users—all with AMD hardware—are reporting the same issue on the live client. In many of those cases, their systems are even higher-end than mine.

Since no solution is currently available in the forums, and given the smooth performance on PTR, I believe this issue warrants internal investigation on your side. It is especially frustrating to see such a performance gap between testing and production environments, especially for a game with relatively modest requirements.

I would greatly appreciate a deeper look into this issue, and any steps your team can take to address it in future patches or hotfixes.

Thank you for your attention and assistance. I’m happy to provide any logs or additional information you may require.

Kind regards, DaiShaN

The performance benefits will be rolled over onto Live on the 15th. It is unfortunate that it has taken this long, but it’s happening.
