Hello, I am working tirelessly on new updates for Gaia’s Retaliation ORPG custom map which is quite popular. The thing is the map is heavy with detail which easily surpasses the currently available doodad limit.
It’s the year 2023, can we finally have the doodad limit removed? Otherwise I am constantly forced into using outdates tools.
Please give some support for custom mapping.
The year is irrelevant, the limit exists for a reason. Engine limitations. They didnt rewrite the engine they just slapped new graphics on it.
the limit is technically because of memory limitations. the old version of the game was 32 bit and that put a hard limit on how much stuff it was possible to have in one game. now that the game is 64 bit however, the memory limit is no longer there. though for the limit to be removed entirely, they have to discard the 32 bit executable. it is currently still available alongside the 64 bit executable.
That’s very untrue. Doodad limit bypasses were created way before reforged was a thing and maps with a lot of doodads worked fine.
that limit actually doesn’t need to exist anymore, and was going to be removed during reforged development, but upper management insisted on keeping an arbitrary limit because (???)
also some of the engine did get rewritten
because they insisted on keeping the 32 bit executable.
well yeah, they fixed (and added) bugs and other behind the scenes stuff. But it’s mostly the same still, because if they changed stuff it would break existing content (which they kinda did anyway) and it’s supposed to essentially be a patch not a new game.
It is still more old than new and Reforged thus inherits a lot of the original game’s technical limitations, even on modern systems.
We only still have the 32 bit executable because games like this are often still being played on older machines that might still be running a 32-bit OS. If they could ditch that it would be trivial to remove a lot of technical limitations (not all though, as typically you use the smallest variables possible because it takes less time to process smaller 8/16 bit values).
Removing the limit wouldn’t break anything. Jass new gen editor with the limit remove has been up for years now and never created issues in-game. Sadly it doesn’t work for Reforged, neither does Wex. Just let us do what we want. It’s just custom maps.
you cant just "let people do what they want because if there are no limits you can make maps and such to deliberately crash peoples games or do other bad things, not that you can’t already but no professional dev team is going to make that easier than it already is.
yeah I don’t think most people are going to fill a map with doodads to make it crash
You’d be surprised…
also idk what y’all are talking about with “32 bit executable” because I checked and both world edit and the game client are 64 bit

might have been removed at some point. I know there was a seperate folder at one point
That being said, being compiled with the x86-64 instruction set doesn’t mean any actual 64-bit functionality is being used. Variables still have to be declared as such to actually have 64 bit values.
now they have removed the 32 bit executable entirely. it still takes time to adjust the functionality of the editor to make it use only the 64 bit stuff.
