Old Warcraft 3 version was 1-2 gigabytes. Reforged costs 28 gigabytes. What’s wrong? How to fix it?
It is much larger in size due to the amount of graphics assets that got loaded in when they updated to Reforged, along with some new versions of existing campaign missions for Reforged mode.
If you don’t have Reforged, it’s practically wasted space you can’t use. There is no fixing it other than downloading a non-Reforged copy of the game and playing that (And making sure it can’t update to Reforged by blocking the game’s executable in the firewall from accessing the internet or editing the hosts file so you connect to a private server like Unforged)
Nothing’s wrong. Higher resolution graphics require more data. There’s no way to fix it, because it isn’t broken.
Sure, if you don’t own Reforged you can’t use it, but even the phone I’m writing this on has 30GB to spare.
If 30GB seems huge to you, it’s time for an upgrade. I can fit like 20 copies of the game in my available free space and I don’t even have that much.
I’m pretty sure this is a troll thread anyway, I find it hard to believe anyone could be unaware of this at this point.
I have a steam library folder on every drive with like over a TB worth of games. Most of which are far larger than war3.
You can buy a 1TB drive for less than this game costs when not on sale (and, to be fair, is probably a better investment)
What the old game called “Sprites” files are big here because there is a lot of details inside game, eg. footprints and trees movement due wind - those were not in original game.
So more detail => more size.
And like Captain said 30GB is not huge, other games have 60 -even more than 100GB.
I think it was good of you to bring it up. Because I was wondering about it too, hehe.
Size is reasonable for a 2020 game.
Not too less <4Gb and; not too much >100Gb.
But I got your point eg. I also have 128Gb SSD on C drive (which is actually 117Gb) on my old desktop and this game take 25% of the space. But this for sure is not Blizzard’s fault.
128gb ssd (if its a fast one) is a good idea for OS drive but you should use a nice big one for games as, like i said, any AAA game is going to be far bigger than this one.
vanilla wow is like 4-5 gigabytes. I really doubt about reforged graphics
Actually, each 3D model in the Reforged installation contains 3 unused copies of itself, and butchers the keyframe motion system with fixed interval keyframe snapshots to avoid the need for upgrading the Warcraft 3 game to support the systems used to originally author the models, such as probably IK rigging or dynamic parenting.
So, if the above issues were resolved by Blizzard I wouldnt be surprised if the number of GBs used fell by several GBs. But they wont be solved because Blizzard doesn’t care. Doesn’t that mean it is their fault?
How do you know? Give proof! If you cannot give proof than this is inappropriate!
proof of what?
Vanilla WoW’s graphics were not that sophisticated, even for the time. It was simply a much larger game as a whole. If they actually used unique models for all the armor and stuff like most other MMOs do today, it would have been considerably larger.
And like I said, pretty much any AAA title made today is at least as large as Reforged and usually larger. There is nothing unreasonable about a 30GB install size considering the storage tech available today for little cost.
This was necessary for compatibility with the game engine, so no, it wasn’t really their fault. Also 95% of the data is textures. 3D models themselves do not take up a lot of space- 3D model files are basically just a list of coordnates in space and the links between them (at the simplest level). It is the hi res textures that consume all the space.
That:
You cannot say that, first how do you know?
Than - if let’s say you are right - they are not “Unused” and they do not “Butchers” anything!
Clearly you want just to accuse without knowing the actual software/sytem design - or how implementation was done! Those are considered accusations! First please prove them, than we can talk!
Did you just ask the guy to provide proof of the other guy’s claims?
I do not care who provide proof, just provide than we can have a discussion based on facts and not suppositions.
We started from topic that game size is too big, than we settled that is not big, compared to other modern games (eg. newer than 2019).
Download game, extract Footman mdx, look at its contents.
That does not prove anything. Give proof!
How would you know? Have you done as he said?
it’s really irrelevant if its true or not. Model files are small. It is the hi-res textures that inflate the data size.
