[Possibility] Increase Limit of Number of Learn-able Abilities and Equip-able Items

I don’t know how many people here or in custom game communities would like to see these two improvements in upcoming Reforged:

1. Maximum number of abilities a hero can learn.

Currently, it’s 5 at max in object editor for a hero (although can be added more via trigger, but due to UI restriction, 7 at maximum is very common)
However, I watched this, and based on the UI they showed, I am afraid that we can’t get any improvement here.

2. Maximum number of items a hero can equip.

Currently, obviously it’s 6 (due to UI restriction). A common workaround is using backpack while actually it’s not convenience for players.
But I think this is more unlikely to be brought to the table compared with above improvement. <= Their official trailer video is an evidence.

What’s your opinion?

the spellbook can store multple abilities inside a sub menu. the amount of abilities learnable should be increased and then map makers can use a spell book to allow players to use them.

Yeah, I knew spellbook, but it’s more like a workaround used for many years.
It has lots of drawbacks, such as, inconvenient UI (you need click spellbook and direct to a new command panel), cannot manipulate those abilities in object editor easily like regular ones.

So I think we need BLZ to officially support increasing learn-able abilities, but we need also realize it’s related to UI, so probably a not likely option for their dev team :frowning:

There has been no word for the limit for Hero abilities, but I have a feeling it will be increased. Like, they are modernizing the game a lot and restrictions like that are really a thing of the past, so it would be just logical to remove those.

And they had said that they are looking into the possibility of adding more inventory slots, so that is likely coming.

the abilities in the spell book can easily be altered in the object editor. it is just normal abilities. map makers specifies what abilities the spell book contains.

Anything that opens up the custom map options is good in my book.

I played around with the idea of a spell that changes a unit’s armor type (Heavy, Medium, Light, Fortified etc) but found out you can’t really do that without physically changing the unit out for another. There’s a lot of hard-coded stuff that I wish were opened up for custom settings.

Actually, you can change attack and armor type with morph abilities (like Bear Form or Metamorphosis). But in general, you are right, there are a lot of hard-coded stuff.

That was not the point. The point was that a hero can’t learn more than 5 abilities in the traditional way.

Morph abilities are great for a unit that turns into something else

But I was thinking of like a Stoneskin buff that applies Fortified or Heavy armor to a unit on top of some armor bonus. You wouldn’t be able to do that unless you have every unit have a morph target, or trigger unit swaps on buff.

Oh right, yeah. Also, there are a lot of stuff that you have to actually have two of the “same” units and just change one thing. It can get pretty tedious if you have a lot of these units.

They did add some trigger functions to change some stats (like some real, integer and string values), I just hope they expand on this and allow a lot more to be changed.

Hello, please see my above comments, it’s not about spell book, we all knew this workaround probably 10+ years ago.

My question is do you think Blizzard will officially support unrestricted or at least increased learn-able abilities and equip-able items in Reforged.

Officially means we DO NOT need to work around like using spellbook or trigger/JASS.

Hi, I know this ais a very old thread but yes this feature would pretty useful.
There is also a limit of hero equivalent entries in the gameplay constants which is too low for maps with really many different heros to pick.
Please just let us define a global limit in the gameplay constants for learnable hero abilities, inventory items and hero equivalents. We can do our own UIs by now to show inventory items which are slots above 6. Spell book workarounds etc. would work for learned hero abilities. You can hide order buttons and get more slots for hero abilities or work with pages and hide some hero abilities. They could also allow us to show specific items from the inventory like SetUnitInventoryUISlots takes integer start returns nothing

Warsmash did 9 items but I’m not sure if that will ever push through since it got striked

Probably that’s the reason they shutted it… it had a longer inventory^^
