New Item Classification: Community

Because WarCraft III loads separate game data from Custom_V1 for custom maps than it does from the root directory, and handles user data/game data rawcode ID collisions in a manner favoring the user data, the WarCraft III engine is already ready and able to accept new items added to the Custom_V1\Units\ItemData.slk table for custom maps that don’t change melee balance and don’t break custom games.

Knowing this to be the case, I believe that a new item Classification should be added to provide new and additional functioning item presets for custom map builders. The new classification could be named Community or Reforged and would not be included with random item pools unless the user chose to include them in the Reforged World Editor.

You can tell me this is a pipe dream because Blizzard has no time for this, but I believe it is worth the attempt at building hype that might allow community members to become a part
of the game. To decide what items to add, I suggest that everyone each post one new item description of their choice below. Here is an example:

Name: Marin’s Other Elixir
Icon: Inv_potion_83 (from World of WarCraft)
Extended Tooltip:
Causes the Hero to be transformed into a random critter for 30 seconds. However, while transformed the Hero will appear to be neutral to enemy players, allowing it to pass undetected through enemy territory.

The effect of this potion may be dispelled as though it were caused by a hostile unit.

History
When Marin Noggenfogger’s first elixir turned too many of his customers into skeletons, he decided to concoct something more docile.

Well… Even though I adore Matrix Eater and I like your ideas… I do not support this idea sadly.

Good Idea and lovely item! A similar idea would be to include some community custom maps in a similar fashion to the ones the original devs made for ROC and TFT.

@yourarthas
Can you elaborate more on why you don’t support it? I’m actually really curious, because I thought it was an idea that couldn’t hurt anything and could add fun without much of any cost

Well I think it is abit of ‘what can happen after Reforged is released’ thing if you ask me and I think it will turn out into just showcasing HiveWorkshop models ingame with a download button instead and which may lead to, in long term, microtransactions out of them

You’re thinking about this differently than I was if you’re going to say it is a step on the slope to microtransations or if we have to involve the Hive or model files.

Traditionally all items have the same model except for powerups and campaign items, so I was thinking that Blizzard could just add a bunch of fun presets that require only icons and no models. That way it isn’t really any work other than data entry based on user submissions, and possibly the addition of new abilities if Blizzard was really into it.

I just think that since custom maps can customize their items anyway, expanding the list if presets can build hype socially without changing the game very much. I made a map to play with my friend in 30 minutes while we were talking about mapmaking. It was a little RPG with Rexxar and Rokhan. In this map we fought desperately to find the best items, since I added a trigger to make enemies drop a random item.

I’m just saying that for the basic fun maps with random items like this, expanding the presets based on user suggestions could be fun.

Curious what your thoughts are on DOTA2 and the community generated cosmetics in the game

You looking at me? I have never played Dota 2; I don’t know anything about that.
