[Main Thread] - FPS Performance Issues - June/July 2023

Yeah, performance seems to randomly change with every patch. God knows why. For the most part I find it not a big issue outside of custom games that use large numbers of units/buildings. But I find it important to stress these performance fluctuations affect everyone, not just AMD CPU users. AMD is usually seen as the “cheaper” option and thus people tend not to have the higher end models, where the performance is high enough that even with reduced performance the game still plays fine.

But I have a Ryzen 9 7900X 4.7GHz 12-core/24-thread CPU and while I can see the lower performance clear as day on the FPS counter, ultimately the FPS is still high enough that normal gameplay (i.e. versus) is not affected.

It’s still a problem. I have AMD Ryzen 7 2700X Eight-Core Processor 4.00 GHz and RTX 2070 super. So I’m guessing this never got resolved?

I installed WC3 Reforged (Live) yesterday, it played beautifully all day, and then I booted it up today and it’s all of a sudden very laggy, to the point of unplayability. AMD Ryzen 9 5900 12-Core Processor 3.00 GHz, 32 GB RAM, with RTX 3080. CoD Warzone runs like butter on this thing. I tried setting graphics to Classic in-game, does nothing. The “Reduce Mouse Lag” box is unchecked. Reading through this thread which is now a year old is really disappointing. I installed the PTR version, and it looks like that fixed the issue so far, but I had to restart the campaign. We’ll see how those bigger maps handle things I guess…

It’s been six weeks. Multiple threads and postings on this forum, back2warcraft has called for help at least twice.

They obviously don’t care.

Something had to change on your system if it worked fine yesterday and not today, because there was no patch or update and nothing has changed with the game.

It’s not only FPS performance issues. It’s constant crashes.

Not necessarily. That’s one thing I’ve also noticed. Every now and then, I have good performance. The FPS jumps like crazy between 140 and 220, but it’s playable. Most of the time, though, I’m stuck at 50-70 FPS with crazy spikes, so it feels like 10 FPS. I can’t reproduce it with restarts or reboots or anything; it’s just random.

Stable 200+ fps on PTR. No spikes, no lags.

You shouldn’t dismiss it though. You could have installed something, a janky Windows update, new game, a setting change that ____ed with the game. it’s tempermental and almost anything could do it, because war3 is just that fussy.

Hi! I bought this game just a moment ago and tried to play with the latest Adrenaline driver 24.7.1, but there are constant hitches and stutters, making the game unenjoyable, not really playable. Capping to 30 FPS does not help. I reported this to AMD via the bug reporting tool in the Adrenaline software, though admitted, that I’m not certain if it’s the game or the driver. I wish I could just play the campaign normally, totally didn’t expect something like this. Naturally I use the ‘Reforged’ graphics.

System in use, nothing overclocked:
Ryzen 7600X
Radeon RX 7800 XT
Gigabyte B650 GAMING X (rev. 1.3) (BIOS Fa5f)
Windows 11 23H2, Build 22631.3880

Да, у меня такая же проблема, Ryzen 5 5500, rtx 2060, проблемы не было в версии 1.32, она появилась в версии 1.35-1.36

It’s not an AMD issue, its a game optimization issue. It runs fine on better hardware (I’m running a Ryzen 9 7900X and its totally playable), but even systems well beyond the minimum spec like yours are chugging to some degree. Switching to classic mode isn’t going to help much either (plus the campaign progression is seperate). Performance changes randomly whenever they release a balance patch. It was good on the last patch, horrible on the patch before that, good on the patch before that, etc.

There is one thing you can potentially try however-
The “Reduce mouse lag” option in the game options often causes massive performance issues far beyond the issues we regularly experience. If this option is checked, turning it off may potentially mostly solve your issue, as it often casues the kind of performance problems you described. If Reduce Mouse Lag is not checked though, then I can’t help you, and would suggest a refund.

Thanks for advice @CaptainJack. The option was already disabled and it states in itself that there can be a performance loss. My case is not exactly about performance though, there are just bad hitches in a frequent manner, though I realize some people in this and other threads talk about FPS performance, but this game is rather light to run it seems, which would make sense. Regular players only want to reach the FPS equal of their panel’s refresh rate, which would be totally enough for me as well.

As soon as Adrenaline 24.8.1 releases I’m going to try the driver out, but perhaps, if I was more eager to troubleshoot, the smartest choice would be to test way older drivers. I’ll tell if it helps anything. I contacted Blizzard’s support also a moment ago.

Yeah, unfortunately that’s about the only suggestion I can make.

It depends on the configuration. Back in the day, the option was available in the performance impact was usually minor. but here, for some people it causes a massive performance drain (but for others, it works fine).

Its entirely possible that the next balance update they do (there tends to be balance changes with each Ranked season) will change the performance again. I don’t think anyone is actually fixing anything, as some patches the performance is fine and in others the performance has been degraded. It seems to be just a coin toss lol.

It may help, it may not. Really, the game does not make much utilization of the GPU at all, the game is much more dependent on CPU.

That being said, I’m glad of your approach to the situation. Like you, I’m not terribly bothered if my FPS decreases from like 300 to 200 or something like that, because that’s still well beyond what almost any monitor can display. The issue tends to be more of a problem with certain popular custom maps, as these often have huge numbers of units and buildings in play (much more than the game normally allows) and the performance drop becomes more of a problem in those cases. But if you primarily play standard war3 (i.e. campaign or non-custom multiplayer games) it should be possible to get to where you need to be.

First of all… sorry for my english if it’s bad
I was having the same problems recently when I bought the game and after having read almost all the thread I also support the idea that it’s a patch issue with amd users
I tested the game by changing the api from directx11 to directx 12, only getting a 10fps increase (normally the game runs at 40-60 fps in my case, this with several quite abrupt fps drops)

I saw a video that suggested using the ptr version to increase the fps but… I don’t know if it’s the best way to use the game this way

I’ll test it soon to see if it really increases the fps and I’ll update this message

My PC specifications:
16gb ram 3200mhz
Ryzen 7 5700G 3.80Ghz
nvidia rtx 3070ti

edit:
after spending some time testing the game in its ptr version, the improvement in fps is quite significant, I went from the 40-70 fps that I mentioned before to having a stable 144 fps (being the maximum refresh rate of my monitor) and perhaps I could surpass that figure by removing the 144fps limit that I put in the game
it should be noted that I am running everything on high with a resolution of 2560x1440 and with the reforged graphics

Hi guys,
Don’t listen/read what CaptainJack say , he is a low IQ idiot who will keep saying that it is your own fault if you have FPS issues even tho PTR works perfectly for everyone and others games aswell.
If you have AMD Ryzen CPU like me, there is a high chance that you got FPS issues and game feel barely playable. There is nothing you can do, its due to patch release and “hotfix” poorly made by blizzard. gl

This worked for me on my ryzen 5 5600

Sometimes the PTR performs different, but that’s because it’s literally a different game version. The PTR is always active and sure, we could all just switch to it. But that doesn’t really solve any problems because the performance will still change with any future patches, which go to the PTR first.

I suppose we should listen to the person who makes flames and personal attacks on other users, they’re clearly the better man, superior person and totally right just because they flung negative attacks at someone else, right? The irony here is you tried to pretend it’s a problem with AMD CPUs and then straight up said yourself it’s a problem with the game. It’s kinda funny how you attack me but then agree with me lol.

Reminder that all such personal attacks will be flagged and reported.

There may well be things one can do on their end to improve the performance. But it’s still not an AMD specific issue and all users have had their performance affected in some way by the patches.

For those who can’t be arsed to watch videos (I hate them too, I prefer textual information where possible), the video above people keep linking to is basically telling you to try having the game run on different CPU cores. This can affect performance and may work, but again, this isn’t unique to AMD CPUs, Windows chooses CPU cores the same regardless of what brand of CPU you’re running.

Maybe if I bold it and italicize it people will get it:

I’M NOT DISPUTING THE FPS PROBLEM. I’m disputing the people who keep claiming that this is only an AMD CPU issue. Playing around with the CPU cores the game runs on may help you, it may not, but ultimately it’s still a game design flaw and it has NOTHING TO DO with whether your CPU is Intel or AMD. From the very beginning of when people started talking about this, there were Intel users complaining about performance issues. It. Is. Not. Unique. To. AMD.

THIS is the misinformation I’m trying to correct.

The problem is, I’m not a troll at all. I post my honest opinions base those opinions on the available facts. You not liking my comments does not make me a troll.

Also:

And then in the same sentence

Sure looks like personal attacks to me.
