Hello everyone,
I am thinking to buy my first Mac ever and got a bit confused.
I want to play only classic Frozen Throne in Bnet and some custom maps like Dota 1, not Reforged, but I am not sure will it be possible.
Can I play it with such configuration :
- Apple M1 (3.2GHz, 16M)
- 7 core GPU Apple M1
- 8 GB LPDDR4X 4266 MHz
- 256GB SSD
- 13,3" (33.78cm) 2560x1600 IPS
And one more question :
Can I get external monitor and play it with external mouse and keyboard?
Back when I played the non-Reforged version of Warcraft III on a Mac long ago (12+ years ago), it was a PowerPC application so then support for it was dropped by Mac around the year 2013 and since then (I assumed) it was not possible to play Warcraft III on a Macintosh computer without emulating Windows. Maybe since then the Reforged team made a patch for Warcraft III “classic” (but upgraded by the Reforged team) that would make the Warcraft III able to run on your M1 chip Mac, but I would not count on this unless you specifically already tried running Warcraft III on a Mac in the last 5 years yourself because frankly I am told that Reforged does not even run properly on other language localizations so I’m skeptical that it would run correctly on foreign operating systems. As far as I know, the Warcraft III Reforged dev team is your only hope in this case, and they were a small team of people in a hurry. Maybe someone else will reply who knows more and who has actually been looking into Warcraft III Macintosh support in the last 5 years, if that exists.
If you’re confused about what I’m talking about, then be prepared to get a Windows emulator for your Mac if you are serious about this.
it could work but, i have not tested it myself. mac os only supports 64 bit executables however. as long as your hardware have all the functionality required to run the game, it should work. in your case, the biggest concern is software however. your gpu however does need to support metal(the api).
I updated this quote to point out that I was making an assumption.
You can play the current version of Warcraft III (you don’t need to buy reforged) on a Mac, but probably not an M1 Mac.
There are community mods to address many of the shortcomings that Blizzard failed to address.
Really, unless you need a mac for some professional purpose, just don’t buy a mac to play games. It really just isn’t a good idea. Even for games that are available on Mac, you usually get better performance by boot camping Windows and playing the Windows version.
Thank you for straight forward advice.
I am really surprised that Apple are not doing nothing decent in gaming area.
It’s largely because almost all games are built on DirectX which is proprietary Microsoft technology. Mac has Metal which is in theory great for this purpose, but due to the differences, it’s hard to support both. Since the reality is most gamers are on Windows, few development teams can justify the work/cost to optimize their games for MacOS. Apple just doesn’t seem very interested in appealing to the gaming sector and is content to focus on their reputation in the professional and education spaces. It’s really a pity because it’s the only reason I don’t seriously consider getting a Mac aside from price- Apple does create good products.
Blizzard does generally support Mac- they got their start developing their games with Macs after all- but unfortunately they kinda dropped the ball on War3, as it appears they never updated the original to run on Intel based Macs.
Again, you can use the current version of the game whether you own Reforged or not- that’s the only way you’re going to be able to play War3 at all on a Mac.
Current versions of Warcraft III should run fine on M1 macs. However I would not be surprised if there is the odd bug or glitch like Heroes of the Storm has.
Spare the money, you have to rely on 10 people’s connections with blizzard servers.
9 games on 10 you’ll get 1 or more disconnections.
When not disconnected people have the around 200 ping (before disconnecting).
Leave it.
It will work anyways. There is a built in emulator in the OS to run intel mac programs, just like there was one to run powerpc apps for awhile. It’s called Rosetta.
two things:
I’ve never had a disaconnect problem on Blizzard’s servers. I recognize some people do, probably because they aren’t close to them or something, but it hasn’t been a problem for me. This was a problem early on but not any more for me.
Thing 2; If it is an issue for you, there is a simple work around in using War3Champions mod. They have servers in more places and when you play using war3champions, it will automatically try to determine the best server to make the game as fair as possible for both/all players. While I honestly would prefer an official solution, W3C does work, as long as you don’t mind the general level of skill of the playerbase being higher on W3C versus on battle.net.
So at this moment W3 classic (Dota1) is playable on Mac Book with M1 chip, but it will be nerves killing with every little issue, update and etc.
Quality of gameplay is not decent and will not be satisfactying.
Like to write on wall with Sh1t, it is readable but no thanks.

In what way does the M1 have issues that Intel macs do not? Or are you trying to say that the Mac OS build is generally unplayable?
Probably he is referring to the mainstream playerbase^^
I am just making consolidation from upper comments.
Still haven’t buyed ProBook to test it my self.
Yes, Warcraft III: Reforged can and works like a charm on MBP 16" M1 Pro. There are no glitches in 4K resolution, and all graphic settings are to the max.
I must admit that I was skeptical at first, but everything is perfect. I will buy more games.

Hi,
I play custom map since along time on Warcraft 3 (td city team/ td city) with MBP M1 Max 32 GoRam at lowest graphic config. Unfortunately, FPS is terrible, and golds/souls farm or dragon roost delivery are damn slow (30% less productive). My mouse Viper acts funny sometimes. All of it despite an excellent internet connection. I admit that since TD city team map has been updated from 1.9 to 4.9 version, a saw serious decrease of MBP efficiency. Also since i’ve changed my config from MBP intel to MBP M1 Max.
I’d like to know if this game would be more playable on Wine/Wineskin or on Play on my mac (Mac GPU would ever compete with a basic NVidea/AMD mother card on game?).
Parallel is known as a consuming GPU/Processor resources.
Can we expect Apple to build a MBP with external device to plug a good mother card?
I hope, Blizzard will develop this game as native for Mac (like Wow). I do not expect buying anymore game from Blizzard till W3 don’t work properly on latest MBP M1. Moreover, Blizzard’s forum doesn’t allow you to leave a comment about this topic if you do have lvl10 minimum on WoW. Too bad for people who’re only play on Warcraft 3!
So Warcraft 3 works on MBP M1 but not on some custom maps even at a very low graphic config.

No, I expect Apple wants you to buy a Mac with a Mx Max SoC.
Then again, the M4 Pro SoC seems to work with some games.
