Ideas on campaign challenges

Howdy

Recently playthrough the normal campaigns with two challenges

  1. Food cap at 50 (Hu, Orc, Ne) + No defense tower except HotD and BC (UD)
  2. One type of unit from each type of building

Both are pretty interesting. Now I’m out of idea, any suggestions?

Btw, I only do challenges on Normal currently because I don’t enjoy playing on Hard or I should say it’s “too demanding” to have some fun.

Edit: new ideas + suggestions

  1. No upgrade (needs to pair with something or it’s just dragging on the game)
  2. Only heros + support units outside of base on Normal difficulty
  3. Only heros + flying units outside of base on Hard difficulty (on some map with no airborne unit available = tower + economy game)
  4. Kill everything + No tower on Normal difficuty (seems too easy)

How about an RPG Mode playthrough?

  • Only heroes are allowed to attack enemies outside your base.
  • Regular units can only defend your base and do stuff that helps your hero (With the exception of missions where you have no base, those play as normal, though putting the hero in harms way more than normal is encouraged).
  • Tower spamming is allowed to expand the boundaries of your base (Or to make offshoots of them).

Sounds fun, but wouldn’t it be too difficult to attack enemy base without any troops?
I can imagine building smaller bases right next to enemy base just to help attacking enemy bases.

Oh yes, it would definitely be more about the towers doing work than your actual hero in some situations.

And hey, who said you can’t bring some troops with you to heal your hero? Arthas can get some priests, DK Arthas can get some ghouls in the back to snack on, et cetera.
Or, if nothing else, protect these smaller bases that are right next to the enemy base. Game the system!

If you really feel like it could get too difficult, I suppose some siege weapons would be fine to bring as backup damage.

Try Hero only. So only your Hero can attack enemy bases and units, your army is allowed to defend your Base. Or in the undead Campaigns once you get Banshess you can only use your possesed units

Doing “challenge” playthroughs to challenge yourself on a lower difficulty is kind of ironic since the whole point of a higher difficulty is for a harder challenge. But it’s understandable if you want to see how much you can limit yourself and still win, or if playing on hard at all is not fun.

How about this challenge? Don’t use your heroes or use them as little as possible. Other than to rescue or acquire units and buy mercenary units, or bringing heroes to required locations when other units don’t work for that. No fighting with them or taking damage for your units, no using or learning hero abilities (not even auras or passives), and no picking up or using items except key items for the purpose of completing required quests (not optional quests). Try not to level them up and to keep them away from enemy units and creeps.

There are a few missions where this might not be possible like if you don’t have a base and not many or any units other than heroes (like The Founding of Durotar campaign). But for missions that you eventually get a base, start with other units, or can acquire or buy units then it might be possible. If you only have a hero, just run past stuff until you acquire units and have the units do all the fighting. Or you can try to run past stuff with them too.

I think this one is too restrictive because the campaign involves both base building and unit only missions, not leveling your heros and gearing them up properly makes those unit only missions not fun to play.

But I can see heros being OP and removing them from combat can be a challenge. Maybe just kill them after they hit the level cap for the mission and don’t res them, but every time you find a good item you will have to res them, put it up and kill them again. Hmm… kinda annoying, not really a good challenge I guess.

You don’t have to kill them. Just keep them farther back but close enough to gain experience until they hit the level cap. Then put them somewhere away from everything. Later like when you’re about done with the mission, that’s when you bring them to any required locations to complete the mission (and pick up any items that you want).

But I’d still say try not picking up or using items so those missions without a base still have some added challenge. If you can use leveled up heroes (as well as any units) on those missions then they shouldn’t be that bad without items on normal difficulty. You could also do this on missions where you eventually reach or build a base, at which point you’d stop using your heroes to fight. Also maybe don’t learn auras so that they don’t inadvertently help on missions where you have a base, such as when your hero is gaining experience or not far from units in combat.

I just tried, I’m not seeing any secret cutscene or dialogue. What’s the easter egg?

I wasn’t sure what he was referring to either. He might just mean that you can build elf/human units and heroes. Although at least in classic, you could build multiple heroes (even the same type) and some buildings could be stacked including towers.

Yeah exactly that, wasn’t sure if that was an easter egg

Hard isn’t really that demanding but the challenge is the destroy everything challenge preferably on hard but do it on normal if you want

Countdown to Extinction

March of the Scourge <Kill everything / creeps/ make sure Caravan destroyed before it reaches village #1>

The Culling

Under the Burning Sky

Awakening of Stormrage

The Druids Arise <Destroy Human/orc/UD bases>

Twilight of the Gods /// < Who is your daddy and destroy human castle and orc stronghold to force the mega pressure of 45 mins at your base /// <destroy Orc base THEN human castle means 2 undead bases stay up can you survive DOUBLE waves?>

Wrath of the Betrayer < Destroy both naga bases

RUins of Dalaran < Destroy both undead bases>

Brothers Stormrage < Destroy EVERY base. Yes EVERY base even the innaccesable one.

yadda yadda yadda all the way to a Symphony of Frost and Flame YOu guessed it. Destroy Illidans base

All of these are easily done.

also I dont know what youre getting at with towers and using only 1 unit or no flying units 95% of campaign missions I only use one unit type and no towers The Campaign isnt that hard. not compared to the Custom Campaigns people have made over the years some of those are brutal.

INfact instead of doing challenges just play custom campaigns which i doubt you have heres 8 in a story that will last you probably a month.

Wanderers of Sorceria on campaign creations .org

infact this strat works for minimal to 0 unit loss SHould be even easier on normal

ELf 6 All heroes solo the mission
UD 1 3 armies not much choice but kel thuzad can afk defend as long as u have enough necros and ghouls . ur best off goblin mining the altars at the start so once paladins are dead their dead. Mass banshees to possess captins
UD 3 Mass banshees to possess abombs can go significantly over food cap 150/100
UD 4 Wyrms I delay the mission an hour longer then i should to farm the marketplace
UD 5 FIends and sapphiron
UD 6 Wyrms and knights you can combine gartithos and ud armies easily with teleport staffs.
UD 8 Wyrms and wagon filled with dragon turtles corpses if your destroying ilidans base.

VS mass wyrms illidan will have about 20 flyers with him just bait them over your tower farm at the south obelisk and you will never lose anything. Wyrms will nuke Belf and naga bases and with new hard mode tremor mechanic. setting up to take 3 obelisks and then trail illidans heels and retake one again will surely destroy his mass towers and weaken his base enoughf or wyrms and dragon turtle animation to completely end his threat permanently.

Destroying everything on survival missions with a time limit sounds like the sort of thing that’d be more demanding than fun, probably to the TC too. Or it might involve some cheap trick like loading up on goblin land mines and rushing the enemy’s town hall, workers and then troop production buildings. Presumably that wouldn’t be allowed for your Twilight of the Gods challenge of surviving double waves for 45 minutes, which further raises the question on whether it should be allowed for other survival missions too. Though if the challenge was to actually destroy everything including Archimonde within those 45 minutes, or even if you don’t include him, then you may have to use a trick like that.

But for the rest of the missions destroying everything could be a more fun challenge, including missions where the time limiting factor can be slowed or negated like The Culling or The Awakening of Stormrage (where destroying the Undead base involves negating it anyway).

I am curious about how hard that Wanderers of Sorceria campaign is you mentioned compared to the Warcraft 3 campaign on normal or hard. Is it about the same? A little harder? Way harder? Or does it largely depend on the custom campaign difficulty you choose?
