What do you think about adding a built in option to buy cosmetics / items (what dota2 has but different for each map) for custom maps that developers can enable / disable. This way developers and blizzard (a small cut will go to blizzard ofc) will have better incentive to keep the quality of custom maps better and with constant updates.
Something like a little app store within the game. I know many people will hate the idea, but imagine how many good maps we can get if people can make money off of them (they will have more time to work on them).
Worst idea ever, we are trying to keep the game free from monetizing, map makers can always make a patreon for themselves, mapmaking is about passion monetizing it will surely only hurt the community
Dota 2 is making money this way and is not pay 2 win. What is the issue if its like that? Many people will not directly donate but will want to buy a nicer skin or something
What is the reason locking skins in a user made map behind a pay wall?
Skins will most likely be downloaded from modding websites that are free so no point in buying.
Or it will come to a point of modelers not releasing any model for free and locking them behind a pay wall which will make the community die out, I am saying this as a modeler and a mod maker, there is nothing logical to make a paywall for the model I made, at most I ask for donations and release them for everyone.
Dont you think that people are more willing to pay for something rather than just donating? Won’t you feel more motivated if you are better rewarded for your work?
No, it will make me feel greedy and guilty instead like I said it either becomes selling something free to download or locking new content behind pay walls and only community will suffer.
A huge legal minefield. As suddenly Blizzard becomes legally responsible for map makers abusing the system to make money. This is why no such thing has come to StarCraft II, with instead Blizzard partnering with specific map development teams rather than pushing out a frame work everyone can use.
Also what you are asking already exists in China. However China is governed by different laws than the rest of the world. For example there is not the strict regulations from the EU or some states in the USA to deal with. This is why very few developers have implemented such a thing and many which did quickly reverted the implementation.
For now as a map maker you can set up a Patreon page and links to other crowd funding or donation managed systems. Many WC3 and SC2 map makers have done this already and it does bring in some money if your map is popular enough. You can also implement cosmetic rewards to your backers using scripting if you so desire.
