I have RoC&TFT. Do i have to buy Reforge to play online?

First of i am not really interested in a discussion about what features is and is not missing, or any surrounding debate of this topic. And i am fully aware that i have to install the Reforge client to do so. So with that out of the way.

My problem is this:
In the WC3 Reforged window in the Battle.net app i only have the options to buy, gift or visit website. I cant seem to find the “game downloads page” options in my Games tab in the application, the closest i get is “All Games” where only Reforge is listed.

So instead i downloaded the legacy installer from the battle.net website and installed it. But when i try to go online with the fresh classic client it just says i am unable to connect to Battle.net, i have tripple checked firewall so it doesnt seem to be that.

Then i tried to locate my install folder for the classic client in the Battlenet app and used Settings → Downloads to set a scan for the installation folder (i have it installed with my other blizz games but hey) but nothing, no matter how many times i re-search with sub-folders etc.

Have i missed something here? Did the 2.0 30year anniversary update change something?

I seem to remember playing it with the Battlenet app and online with only my classic bought 2years ago or something. And if i remember correctly i used the legacy installer and the classic bnet update to “force” it into the battlenet app.

As long as your RoC CD key is registered in your Battlenet account, you can play the standard mode of WC3R.

To install it:

  • Log out of the launcher
  • Click the cog icon in the upper right of the log in window
  • Select Continue without logging in
  • Buy button will change to Install
  • Once install starts you can log back in to the launcher in the upper right

That worked wonders, thank you. Really unintuitive solution though like… XD

Oh my god, it does work. Thanks so much for the thread! Only 2 hours before I wanted to do the exact same thing xD Cheers mates!! Well done!

Glad you got it sorted. It’s not intuitive at all, but it basically happens because the install button only checks for Reforged ownership and not for the legacy keys. However, if the game is installed, it will then check your account for legacy keys if Reforged isn’t present on the account.

Honestly, the reforged purchase does have a little more value than it used to have with many more hero skin options and some other stuff added in the 2.0 update, but I still wouldn’t blame you for not wanting to pony up on that.

Thank you so much! My friend outright bought it because he didn’t think of googling it. I had the exact same scenario OP described and, like OP, I was so sure I had already played wc3 when Reforged was already live. Downloading reforged now. Thank you so much for posting this!
