How to counter Human AI (Insane)

I consider myself a decent enough player at this game, but for some reason I can always have difficulty with the human AI on insane difficulty - the issue is that when they attack around early-mid game, it’s with far more units than anyone should be able to reasonably control, and they end up microing me to death every single time, even if they attack me in my base, right in range of ~8 fully upgraded watchtowers.

Normally I play orcs, with my team being a combination of Grunts (or taurens, mid-late game), raiders, shamans, as well as a far seer, shadow hunter and tauren chieftain (all heroes probably having lightning orbs to handle flying units better).

This is particularly frustrating since I rarely have the same problem with undead, orcs or night elves, but humans have always been a thorn in my side. Suggestions?

AI way of play has certain vulnerabilities you should take advantage of. They creep much slower but because of insane resources they build a big army not worrying about upkeep. They also upgrade armor and attack of all units. They also never fast expand.

You should try to make a push when you have a significant hero level advantage (ie level 3) focusing mainly on hero kills and having the support of an expansion near tier 2. Witch doctors with healing will help a lot, as you will have to continue pushing after the hero kill without a pause. If you pause the attack to heal with salves you risk facing a huge food count army with many upgrades.

What if it’s a large map, such as an 8-way free for all? While I agree your comment works for smaller maps, once you get to a certain size it’s hard to lock everyone down.

1 vs 23 Insane Computers - YouTube you can try and use tricks like this guy does, he has a few video’s against insane AI

I’ve decreased the amount of initial units slightly from 8 footmen and 4 riflemen to 6 footmen and 3 riflemen, but in return I’ve fixed human AI getting stuck at T1 for hours, now it makes T2 pretty quick, and will become a force to be reckoned with, so take your pick AI got much worse - #4 by TastyMorsel-1681

Also I’ve listed the AI bugs I’ve encountered over the years in the above forum link, but if they haven’t been fixed in twenty years, what are the odds of them getting fixed now?

When I want to play vs. Insane AI I simply stop taking my pills. Were are then on EQUAL FOOTING. “Get psyched!”, as B.J. Blazkowicz says.

insane isnt really that much different it just gives the AI a massive resource advantage.
