How to be good at wc3 is unclear

unlike classic skill based games like chess it is clear to put the king into a position where he cannot move wins. In wc3 the way to win is to kill all buildings. but many people play to kill the enemy army. something about this is not right.

Nah there are strategies that focus the buildings. Lame grubby strat (mass raiders) or invisible mortar teams or mass tanks are examples.

King in chess is what buildings are in Warcraft. Before you reach the king you must eliminate figures which defend him. If your opponent have nothing but king and maybe few pawns and you have almost all of your figures it’s obvious that at this moment you are basically the winner.

The only difference is that in chess you keep playing until checkmate and in Warcraft opponent can tap out and leave the game.

or letting your army die and make chims flying away from an army you cant beat in a fight and puking on all their buildings?

Ultimately you would kill the buildings to win if the enemy is not leaving before. You kill the army so he has nothing to protect the building anymore. Same for chess you dont just go for the king you go for the other figure first so nothing protects the king anymore. In chess you can also give up a lost game before you are checkmate.

PS: What a stupid and senseless post, why am i even responding.

except if you just stand there protecting your buildings they will control all the mines. then they can build with more gold than you can get.

In warcraft 3, you are the king. If your opponent destroys your army, you wont be able to make any more moves, so you lose the game. Just like in chess.

You can hide your buildings of course, but you still lost the game.

It is called strategy!

after your army is destroyed you can make new units unlike chess. then you can destroy all buildings. in theory night elf should be able to win all games.

Why are you so focused on Chimera, all most any other flying units could do the same. Gyros are really good for that!

because bro. as long as you hide buildings and have chimeras with the siege upgrade you should win almost any game. the trick is to make them go like 100 food rifle casters or something. act like you lost. then just snipe all their bases. they would have to kill their own army to get like bats or d hawks or smthing.

RTS games introduce elements that aren’t really present in other games

  1. Strategy - This is arguably one of the most important parts of an RTS game like warcraft 3…you have to plan, and figure out how to achieve your goal…it’s a lot more than just unit composition - it’s about how to outsmart your opponent…clever players can sometimes overcome being inferior in skill.

  2. Scouting - I think this speaks for itself. Want to be good at an RTS (not just warcraft 3 but even starcraft 2?) - you have to gather as much information as possible about what your opponent is doing. Playing in the dark and relying on a coinflip to outskill your opponent can lead to you getting worked badly.

  3. Micro - Unit control… This is probably what separates skilled players from your average noob. Understanding how each unit moves, the feel of how they work in combat, knowing when autocast is appropriate, how to position ranged/siege, etc. Micro is > macro in warcraft 3 - as macro isn’t very complex due to the simple upkeep system.

Macro - economy…good ol’ economy. It’s important even in real life war - you have to maintain economy to support a strong army. in warcraft 3, it’s all about understanding the upkeep system. Your average player doesn’t understand the system…you can see it from a lot of posts in this very forum. For example - players advising elf players to “bring a lot of wisps to late game fights” vs human and undead to counter caster issues or summons issues - The upkeep system is pretty simple, just ask yourself these questions:

  1. Can i enter upkeep and maintain the army if i lose it?

  2. Do I enter low upkeep before my expansion? cuz if I do it’s essentially an 1 base all in (If you are just creeping the map in low upkeep because you over-made units, you’re playing the game incorrectly and do not understand the system.)

  3. How long am I staying in no upkeep? What direction am I going for? reactive play? expansion?

  4. Arguably something that really some people believe cannot be ‘Taught’…your DECISION MAKING. This has always been one of the most important parts of an RTS game…many gamers don’t have it, and I personally believe that’s why many other gamers don’t fit in with us RTS players…games are very simple and forgiving nowadays.

in games like warcraft 3, starcraft 2, one bad decision WILL cost you the game in matches vs equal skill. it is extremely unforgiving to lose your entire army because you took a fight you shouldn’t have…fighting uphill on a ramp…in a choke, etc. I’ve personally beaten players that have out macro’d, out crept, out played me in general, because they took fights they shouldn’t have taken, or went for unnecessary risks (Tinker first because they learned a cheese strat in 4v4) and get punished hard.

One thing I want to add in this thread is the warcraft unique element of creeping.

Look guys…Creeping wins games…sometimes it’s good to be aggressive…sometimes it’s great to rush…sometimes it’s really important to all in, but generally, especially in a 1v1 game, you should really focus on creeping…I don’t mean that it’s always about killing every orange + red camp on the map - sometimes it’s sniping a certain mob just to get the item? Creep-jacking is also what I would couple into creeping.

This is just my opinion from years of RTS and warcraft 3 experience as a top player on the ladder. I understand that being a top ladder player is a lot different than being a top tournament player - but take it for what it’s worth

If what you said were true, then wouldn’t all pro games look like this?

Watch some pro games. Figure out what they’re doing differently and why they don’t all just hide buildings and tech chims.

Objective: destroy all enemy buildings as quickly as possible… and/or prevent enemy from gaining resources

How to be good: utilize all resources (XP, items, expo, etc) inorder to prevent opponent from gaining control over the map

How to troll: mass towers, harras w/ solo hero, tech to batriders, focus on enemy workers

How to be innovative: burrow rush, mass moon wells, build a town hall near enemy and mass TP all your units to them, or fast tech with late altar
