Here's my opinion

As a veteran WC3 player who got the game when it first released and the xpac when it released and still owns them on physical discs. I am appalled at how Blizz is handling this. It’s one thing if online play doesn’t work. I am fine with that since I like story mode better. Saying you fixed an issue when all you fixed was the launch problems is wild. Not communicating with Mac Users about what has caused the issue is wild. All I want to do after a stressful day in my college classes is play some Warcraft 3 and forget about real life. Not search the forums for fixes that ultimately don’t work or require me to install extra crap on my mac just to get a Windows version of the game running. It’s already bad enough Blizzard is just re-releasing xpacs on WoW and calling them “classic” now they’re remodeling WC1 and 2 while 3 still doesn’t work for Macs? Come on Blizzard, you used to be the cool company that cared about all of it’s players. Now you’re turned into a money-hungry corporation that only cares about profits and nothing else.

Here’s my opinion.

Maybe I"m just lucky, but I updated the game, launched it, it worked fine. New skins, new HD classic look, menus are better (mostly), game runs fine, I was honestly floored by how much better this update made the game (for me). I know some people are having technical issues and I hope they get sorted out, and hopefully they’re not just putting this out there and calling it a day- but for at least some of us the game is working fine.

You just sound really ungrateful. The war1/2 remasters are very nice (though there are some missing features from war2bne in the war2 remaster) and this update added an entire library of hero skins as well as online/ranked improvements. They removed AT vs RT in 3’s and 4’s which a lot of people were asking for becuase of the fairness issues, etc.

They didn’t communicate with mac users (other than posting the notice they’re aware of the problem) because they were busy with this update. saying “sorry we can’t fix this until we’re done with this massive 2.0 patch” would well, you know, kinda spoil the surprise they were doing it.

Don’t get me wrong. there’s more issues than there should be and they sh ould be held accountable for that. but I think there’s too much residual hostility from the past here- the game is still less broken now than it was when reforged launched.

I thought Discord was joking when they said they updated Reforged and what not. Guess it wasn’t enough that they pissed all over the original game they had to dig up this corpse and do it again.

The reality is, people who aren’t having problems don’t announce to the world on a forum that they’re not having problems.

The fact is there are plenty of people playing this game right now, and in fact more than there have been in a long time. That absolutely doesn’t mean that no one is having problems. There are always problems, even in the most well crafted games. But the people I see in game suggest to me that less people (at least, excluding Mac users…) are unable to enjoy the game now than in the past.

First I think it’s worth noting Blizz clearly did not care about their users on the original release of reforged, just force players onto new engine for minimal graphical updates for hefty $40 price tag. loss of IP rights over your own maps you created, loss of many functions of original Frozen Throne, along with game stability/compatability/similar issues.

I will admit this is probably the only positive thing you could say about the updates, were they true. Original reforged graphics were not terrible, 2.0 is actually worse looking than any other version of wc3 I have played. Also, if any of the player base was concerned about graphics, we would most likely not be playing a 25+ year old game to start with. This point is pandering to none but stockholders and the like. The players by and large would prefer stability, functionality, gameplay and feature improvements. The slight UI shifting does not change anything, I just have to click twice to get to custom games lobbies instead of it being on my home screen now. And I am not a 12 year old child who needs it to be freshened up with new fortnite skins in my warcraft games.

This update like all major reforged rollouts has resulted in more issues than benefit to the playerbase. One major issue I would like to point out is when exiting a game that has ended by clicking “Quit Game” which used to bring you back to the main menu, now closes out/crashes my game as if i clicked “Exit Game.” You might say it’s a minor inconvenience to have to relaunch the game every time I finish a match, but is it so much to ask to do an update without making things break, or just not do the update at all? Is it too much to expect to not have to relaunch my game after every match? I can not imagine if I was a Mac player and could not even get into the game right now, or finally get in after long headaches and workarounds, just to see how bad the update is.

This is both true and misleading. It is Activision, not Blizzard itself, who did not care. THis has been well established by former developers. Activision was no longer interested in the project and defunded it, firing developers until there were too few to do the job properly and it was only released out of obligation. And when Activision was faced with the deservedly negative press following the resulting incident, they outsourced another company to do the work that was left unfinished by the original team. Now, Microsoft is in charge, and we recieved an update that, while still h aving issues, is far more substantial than any previous, plus two projects we never knew were coming until they were about to happening. It is legitimately hard to believe that Playside Studios, who was given custody of the game after the fallout, is still the company working on this.

Again: The failed Reforged launch was not the fault of the developers, it was the fault of the publisher who cut them off. It was not made by people who didn’t care, it was made by an ever shrinking number of people forced to do the work of more people as their publisher pulled the rug out from under them.

Sure, granted that may all be the case, I did not keep up with the activision drama, they may have been solely responsible for the rushed hack job of original Reforged that overpromised on campaign and multiplayer and removed IP rights to map creators and removed functionality and stability.
It doesn’t really matter to me if developers had to ship an unfinished project due to their management, or if the whole project is bad because of the developers mistakes or project managers’ agenda. What matters is the game gets the criticism it deserves, whoever directed this mess then or whoever is now. So perhaps the original reforged release is another topic for another day passed.

But that does not address any of the substantial issues of this current patch that “floored” you with how much better it made the game for you. Does it really look better? If that’s your opinion I suppose its subjective so I can’t really argue that, but the polygons have never been more clear and shading worse on the original WC3 unit models in the custom maps I play, and they frankly look uglier than ever to me. And did it even need to look better for you or the average player to enjoy it more?

Did the UI really improve or just shift buttons around slightly and change border shapes and positions? I think it may just be the latter, there may be an additional setting or 2 you can toggle to show keybinds in your UI, that is the only real new feature I have noticed, and it’s honestly unnecessary and unimpactful almost like a backhanded gesture.

Was the update worth the issues it’s caused players like me who are sick of the updates being pushed on us knowing every time that it comes with technical issues, which came true once again? What did it provide vs what did it take from the players. I really don’t see what is so great about this patch to you, but perhaps something good will come of it after the technical issues are cleared up.

It might not be to you, but to me it’s an important distinction. It’s not right to blame the developers when it wasn’t their fault. Yes, there is blame that needs to be dealt, but it should be dealt to the right people/entities.

And I think it’s important to note that it is evident that there are different bigwigs heading the project now. Mistakes may still be made, but it is the response to those mistakes that should dictacte how we judge them.

For instance the significant issues certain groups, such as Classic key users and Mac users, experienced. Steps were taken very quickly to address those issues, and while it hasn’t been completely resolved yet, the fact they put out a hot fix the very same day the patch was released tells me that whoever is in charge now cares more about the project than Activision in the time leading up to the launch of Reforged.

lol I just recognized your username, we play LegionTD frequently xD
If you logged on and played tonight, surely you saw how bad those unit models look. But I do appreciate and agree with this sentiment it is well put

and I do think it’s an improvement on the past if they did truly put out hotfixes today that resolved technical issues for some people.

But still you aren’t addressing what is most important about this patch, what did we gain from the patch today, even? I have yet to hear one substantial improvement, like to functionality or stability or any features that make a marked improvement, not to mention if it was even worth all the technical issues it brought.

I have a tip. If you are a gamer, Dont buy a mac. Who even buys a mac for gaming ??

I’ve played legionTD maybe two or three times ever. This is a common username and it’s the reason why battletags have a #1234 tag on the end.

personally I think almost everything was improved (Unless you are a Mac user who still can’t log in). Ill come up with a shortlist:

  • More game servers mean better pings in Versus for many players, and this was a huge complaint from many and one of the driving factors in the creation of W3C (aside from the fact that ranked hadn’t been implemented at all yet
  • New (sort of) content in the form of new skin options for many heroes to be NPCs from the game instead of the generic hero
  • Revamped menus that in most ways (though not all) an improvement and evoke more of the original UI than before. The new campaign menu is honestly really nice and way better than the original especially.
  • improvements to the official ranked play system in both function and reliability. For most of Ranked’s existence the match reporting system was incredibly unreliable especially in the team modes, and it is much improved now.
  • The new Classic HD visual options, which look much more like the originals compared the completely new visuals in the Reforged graphics. There may be some difference of opinion on this but more options is never a bad thing.
  • New portrait icons from warcraft I and II
  • Restoration of the TFT main menu screen which many of us missed
  • new options for serious players to display APM and game time elapsed
  • better terrain art for Reforged mode (at least, I think it’s better)
  • addition of classic music from the past games in the series (I’ve been using the Warcraft II music)

All of the issues I can see right now are technical ones. This update did so much good. I’m not sure how you can’t see it. I suppose if you haven’t bought Reforged or the battle chest that you might not see some of these improvements, but I think they hoped if they improved these things that more existing players would want to switch to Reforged.

You’re not alone, CaptainJack. Zero performance problems on my end as well. To be fair, I did a clean install, so maybe that helped. But the game runs flawlessly.

Those of us who do media work and aren’t hard core gamers? Why do I need a “gaming” PC to play a 22 year old game?

A game’s age does not determine the hardware required to play it. Constant updates and overhauls will inevitably cause the minimum requirements to rise.

You are not playing Warcraft 3: Reign of Chaos or Frozen Throne. You’re playing Warcraft 3: Reforged. They are not the same game.

I have a 2022 gen pc build so this doesn’t apply to me

Same story line, literally same code underneath, just crappier textures and riddled with all sorts of bugs. Don’t even get me started on what they showed the player base when they announced this heap compared to what was released. Rebranding something and changing the name doesn’t make it a different game.

The recommended system requirements for Warcraft III: Reforged are:

  • Operating system: Windows 10 64-bit (latest version)
  • Processor: Intel Core i5-6400 or AMD Ryzen 7 1700X or better
  • Video: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 or AMD Radeon R9 280X or better
  • Memory: 8 GB RAM
  • Storage: 30 GB HD space
  • Internet: Broadband Internet connection
  • Input: Keyboard and mouse
  • Resolution: 800 x 600 minimum display resolution

Any modern base model computer Mac or PC should run this game with ease. You don’t need a gaming PC to play this game at all. Back before reforged, you only needed 1gb of ram to run the game. It’s a 22 year old game, I remember when they added 1080p support to the original game, nothing crashed and if it didn’t work people were able to roll back with their game discs.

Changing the system requirements due to the patches necessitating heavier hardware does.

You can’t run Reforged on the same computer you can play the original on. Every version of the game is a different game, both codewise and from a legal standpoint. The original game is not supported by the developer and you need this new product that provides a version of the old product that has been changed so it fits better with current era hardware.

They are different games.
