I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the orc, human and undead campaigns (the latter being my favorite). I’ve a couple gripes with the dialogue and storytelling, but for the most part, Arthas’ story, the Undead Scourge, etc., are still the best storylines of the bunch. A successful story is one you can identify with; a human story with a touch of horror/macabre. But it’s a hit-and-miss with this game.
I’ve spent so much time on the Night Elf campaign, which has mostly been boring save for parts of Maeiv’s little chapter, but there are plots in this campaign that feel shoehorned in. I just cannot get into the Night Elf stuff. It feels so cringe, edgy and melodramatic. Someone help me understand why the Night Elves and/or Illidan are so popular. Granted, I’ll admit they have some cool character designs, but their storylines feel so damn lackluster and fantastical— so over the top. Even as a fan of the fantasy genre, I find this story content hard to digest.
They could have alleviated a lot of this by adding in chapters dedicated to Sylvanas, maybe. ( Or maybe they did in The Frozen Throne, which I am yet to play…)
Night elf archer/huntress. That’s the appeal.
Seriously though, they fulfill the role of the Protoss in this story - this mystical, wild race that has answers for everything. I do agree that they come out of nowhere and their connection as the main nemesis of the Legion is a bit “out there”, especially since the story kinda forgets about Arthas and the Scourge at that point. I guess I like their aestethic the most, because even Tyrande/Furion stuff kinda bored me as a teen.
Their chapter mostly serves to show all three races come together to defeat the Burning Legion under the leadership of NElfs and as such it works. It’s just kinda weird, becuse again - Night Elves come out of nowhere and have no stake in the story up until the very end.
And I always find it funny that fan-favourite Illidan had extremaly limited sceentime in RoC and only rose to prominence in TFT. I think even Antonidas had more screentime than him.

I made this observation. For some reason I didn’t find any of it believable. They also wanted to introduce two major evil entities at once (The Burning Legion and the Scourge), which kind of muddled things.
Funny you say that, they’re the only unit I like. Aesthetically pleasing.
Oh no. I know that he plays some role in The Frozen Throne, but I hope that it’s not a large one. I’ve suffered this guy for years in WoW. I love story arcs that end. But they will not let this one rest.
I remember several years ago Blizzard even threw up a poll to determine who had more fans: Arthas or Illidan. Arthas won, but not by much. It has to be an aesthetic thing, because Legion’s storytelling is a prime example of how cringe they can make things. All this cliché, “Chosen One” nonsense – I had always thought Blizzard better storytellers than that.
People like to deem Illidan as some kind of hero. He’s an anti-hero at best, but I’ve argued for years that his story makes no sense, no matter how much people try to justify it. I suppose if I was still a teenager full of angst I would see where the pure aesthetics would overwhelm anything else.
Yeah about that - he’s the main character. Which is kinda funny, becuse all the promo art and even the cover on the box push Arthas as the main protagonist, and Illidan, Kael’thas and Sylvanas have more story prominence than him.
Arthas literally shows up in the very end of the campaign, beats up everyone and wins. He’s just kinda there, which is sad.
TFT essentially is the “origin story” of Burning Crusade more than it sets up Wrath of the Lich King, if you get what I’m saying. It explains how Blood Elves and Forsaken came to be, why Illidan is doing what he’s doing in BC and all that. The “Frozen Throne” part is ironically a side story, that only comes to play at the very end with the majority of the plot focusing on Illidan and his shenanigans.
And if you know the plot of BC you’ll be very surpised to see TFT Kael’thas behaving very differently than his BC counterpart.
Tyrande, and many of the female elves, are very attractive. There is no doubt about that. But her and Malfurion are numbskulls-- like a couple of dim-witted Winnie the Pooh characters. They make Maiev look like a genius.
