He’s got the three stripes during the Third War in Chronicle Volume III, in the artwork where he’s killing Cenarius.
Yes. And the Reforged Grom should be following the original Wc2/Wc3/Flash Back Grom from WoW. Where are we differentiating here?
Then they made an error because Garrosh’s entire character design is based off Grom having the full black jaw.
Or… it’s a retcon.
Get over it. Your full black jaw’s no longer canon.
Welcome to the original reason I made the topic, Casual.
I get that they’re trying to retcon it. I’m expressing anger at this decision and encouraging them to unretcon it. Grom Hellscream deserves to have his full-jaw tattoo.
EDIT: And before you restate it, I don’t care if you think it looks dumb. I don’t, and many others agree.
But the Warcraft books cover the RTS games and the MMORPG as well as extra material. There’s one canon for the main series with another canon for the movie universe, it’s novelization, and prologue.
I don’t care that you don’t care and I have just as much right to fight this request as you have to make it.
I LIKE this new design and I don’t want it arbitrarily changed to appease people this game’s not even marketed toward.
not even marketed toward.
How is the game not marketed toward the original fans?
Because they want WoW fans playing it too. And WoW fans outnumber “original” fans.
Simple math.
Because you’re labouring under the delusion that there are separate canons.
Timeline wise we agree indeed but your assumption for agreement is based on a faulty premise.
WoW features 2 characters, both named Grommash Hellscream. (MU Grom and AU Grom)
One had the full black jaw, which his son emulated in memory of his father.
The other didn’t even have a son, didn’t drink demon blood, didn’t get the full jaw tattoo and invaded the timeline from WC1,2,3,WoW, TBC, WotLK,Cata,MoP and onwards.
Here’s the thing. It stopped eventually because Blizzard didn’t listen (because let’s be honest; they don’t listen to feedback like this, they never have and never will, but I choose to put my voice out there saying it regardless), but the WoW fans were pissed about Grom’s WoD model, too.
Weird, I don’t recall there being that much backlash. And I was there.
Then you weren’t looking, because I was there too, I was there when we first saw it, and there were tons of comments about how huge he was, how he should have been leaner, how he needed to be slimmed down, and asking where the hell his full-jaw tattoo was.
Which forum were you on? The Hive? Because of course the majority of the backlash would be there.
It was practically nonexistent on the WoW forums.
Sorry filthy, I’m on Blaze’s side here. I was annoyed at this too and so were most of the lore community I saw but we figured as long as it’s just AU Grom, it’s fine. Because he’s not the Grom we know and love.
Blizzard’s WoW forums and MMO Champion lore forums.
No, I was seeing it on the WoW forums. General forums, beta forums…
shrugs
Oh well. I still prefer the new design. I don’t think any male orc should be thin unless he has some sort of eating disorder making him weak, and full jaw tattoos can’t possibly be without negative side effects related to mouth use.
If this is Grom’s new canonical look, I’ll happily accept it and chalk up Garrosh’s tattoo to him being an idiot.
I mean… Garrosh was an idiot and the tatt doesn’t look bad. But I feel it’s such a pointless retcon that messes with an iconic look and messes with lore.
And yeah… I just like the full black tatt, maybe it’s nostalgia.
At least Grom has SOME sort of tattoo on his jaw, even if it is the three stripes he sported in the movie (as opposed to the one stripe from his WoD counterpart). I’d be more pissed off if they’d completely done away with it entirely.
Cos you’re right, him having a jaw tattoo is iconic. But I’m glad they made it more reasonable instead of something ridiculous and nerve-killing.
Maybe as a compromise you guys can request the full-black tat as a skin option since Blizzard’s gonna be doing those. Call it “Classic Grom” or something.
As was mentioned before, Garrosh’s tattoo was in explicit mimicry of his father’s. In the novel, the one who performed Garrosh’s Tattoo was the apprentice of the one who did Grom’s, and notes that Grom didn’t sweat while his tattoo was being done. It’s noted that even when done with experienced hands, it would be very painful, and would have taken hours.
Grom having a full-jaw tattoo, with this information, just further emphasizes how ungodly tough he was. Aside from Gorehowl, there were three things that were always brought up when describing Grom in novels: His slim build, his ear-splitting shriek of a battle-cry (I will note: I go so far as to admit, I was disappointed in Grom’s Warcraft 3 voice the first time I heard it; I just couldn’t picture that voice giving his legendary scream), and his lower jaw being tattooed a uniform black.
Over time, all three of those things have vanished into the ether. And it makes me sad.
EDIT: Fun fact: I forget where, but I remember there being a point in a novel where he WEAPONIZES his shriek, basically screaming into a guy’s ear until he started bleeding.
