Gamma slider issues

Hey, I am having an issue with the gamma slider in the game. I can change it, differently from what other people experience when they can not do anything with it, but no matter if I choose the game to be brighter or dimmer, the gamma stays the same. I can crank it up to the max but it stays as dark as it was before and then it seems that I can not move the slider once I am in a match. Has anyone encountered this issue and perhaps knows a fix for it, since it is not quite fun to play it in the dark and I do not want to change my monitor’s settings everytime I play warcraft.

One should not be modifying the gamma slider anyway as its use case no longer exists. It was intended for CRT displays which could have variable gamma response curves. All modern displays follow sRGB gamma like response curves which are standardized. As such there is no need to modify the gamma slider at all as the correct gamma should be set by default.

Gamma is not brightness. If you want to alter display brightness, or more correctly contrast, use either your graphic drivers or the panel on the display.

The reason it might not work is because the gamma feature relies on the output translation look up tables which convert computed values into DAC values. Now of course digital interfaces mean that the last purpose no longer exists, but it is still used to translate colours for display calibration and by legacy games for “gamma” functionality.

However because the setting is per display, it means that only 1 set of values for it can be used at a time and this is shared between drivers, the OS and applications. When running in windowed mode (even fullscreen) the application cannot set the table values as it would effect the desktop as well. Hence when Warcraft III is running in windowed fullscreen mode (default) gamma is disabled.
