FFA was always 4 players, what you smokin? Free for all just means more than 2 people and no teams. How is the purpose defeated?
And I reccomend not pirating the originals, which you probably still own anyway.
The third party community outside of the live game and W3C (which is more reccomendable, as it adds back a lot of old functionality and offers a better ladder system than W3 ever had) is tiny at best, and it’s mostly pro level players, if you like getting stomped, sure, do it.
Again: FFA was always 4 players. Reforged did not change this. I can understand the opinions on the map pool (which has changed), but FFA was always 4 players.
That said: If you have the classic keys on your account (or you still have the original CDs and their keys) you don’t need reforged at all to play, All the reforged purchase does is give you the revised campaign and graphics (and a better widescreen camera view), and some custom games depend on it. It is not needed to play multiplayer or the original version of the campaign.
It wasn’t called that, but it was certainly a thing. You might be thinking back to starcraft, which did not have matchmaking systems. Warcraft III was blizzard’s first game to have a matchmaking system- and FFA was definitely included in it, and was basically the same that it is now.
You can certainly play vanilla in custom games, which is what I assume you were doing before. But matchmade FFA was definitely a thing.
If you queue FFA in versus, I can assure you there will be games. War3Champions, a popular community mod that restores some lost functionality to the game, also has an FFA mode (Plus ladders for some popular custom games), and is worth keeping the game for. Just google it. But be aware that the level of competition is going to be higher than anyone you’ll meet on battle.net.
W3C also has servers for game hosting in more locations than battle.net offers, so depending on where you are, it could even offer a better experience. For custom games it also lets you switch regions within the game just by being installed, even if you don’t end up using W3C proper. It’s a great tool and makes the game considerably more worth playing.
I’ve not heard of anyone ever getting banned for it, it doesn’t even break the Terms. It’s theoretically possible, but AB is basically not moderating the game as it is. If they did ban people for it, they’d be banning some of their most loyal players, as W3C is what the hardcore competition is using. W3C has been around for quite some time without any issue. Quite frankly if there was any risk to using it, you’d probably see people getting suspended here for talking about it, and that has never happened that I’ve seen.
On that note, as I said before, if you try it, expect to get crushed, unless you’re particularly good. W3C addresses numerous issues with Reforged besides and makes the game much more worth playing.
As I said before as well, you can of course create c ustom games the way you did before on any map you like, but people aren’t really playing vanilla in custom games. Though if you have a lot of friends, Reforged upped the maximum number of players to 24. So that’s a thing.
No they have not “always” been 4 player. In RoC they had 5 and 6 man ffa in the normal matchmaker. At some point this was changed to 4 and 5 then eventually it was only 4 players.
I’m not going to straight up call you wrong, but I’ve played war3 since the beta, and I don’t remember FFA ever having more than 4 players. But I also didn’t play it often. So I accept that I could have a faulty memory here.
(I really wish they didn’t remove Team FFA in RoC, that was way more fun)
