Feedback: What made wc3 great and why the new footman is not

My Two cents on reforged

  1. Do not re-scale unit sizes!
The most important thing that should not be changed in the game is the scaling of units. The original designers of wc3 nailed this one, and it made the game feel very nice to play. The units and heroes were proportioned to each other perfectly. The tall and skinny footmen you’ve designed are a big mistake and will make fighting look “messy”. (also riflemen seem too big and knights too slender and less “chunky”). I don’t mind some scaling differences with buildings but units need to stay the same size as before. And this has nothing to do with “looks” of the game, and everything to do with playability of the game.

  2. Try to keep the original unit artwork as much as possible!
I think adding more detail to the game is a great idea but you need to try and stay true to the original artwork, as mentioned by others including grubby. What defines a unit in wc3 needs to be respected to keep the authentic feel of WC3, like the shield and the sword of the footman (of which niether stands out in the new model as an example). Again, the designers of wc3 understood the reason for this, it’s what makes every unit stand out clear on the battlefield, by their respecive “visual trademarks”. Without these you get the kind of game where everything just mashes together visually and makes it hard to play.

  3. The animations seem too slow
This one is also key, avoid making too realistic and slow animations as it will ruin the feel of the game. Like the current riflemen, even if they shoot instantaniously their post animation looks slow and makes the gameplay feel slow and clumsy. Take note from the original on this one too guys.

Some other less crucial stuff:
I definetly like the idea of increased unit selection size, however not the sc2 unlimited style.
16-18 would suit the game perfectly.

Militia should look a bit simpler, will be too hard to distinct from footmen with the current look.

Don’t like the new ghouls at all, just improve on the original artwork instead.

The UI could be made customizable i think. its 2019 next year ^^

Lots of good things mentioned by other people like :

  • Rejoining disconnected games
  • Join a game as an observer after it has started
  • A battle.net account linked to your game account so people cant create unlimited amount of game accounts like in wc3

Overall super excited about this project. Thanks Blizzard!
