Enjoying WC3 has been a funny experience in a mundane way

I just think it’s funny how ridiculous this experience has been. Not necessarily in a bad way. Just weird.

I got WC3 recently because I’ve been playing a lot of RTS games. Playing through AoM retold (love that game) made me want to play other old and acclaimed RTS games and so I got WC3.

Lo’ and behold, when I log into the campaign with reforged graphics, I get a whole lot of stuttering. I go online to figure out the problem and get told to either use ye’ olde graphics or try playing in the Public Test Realm. I switch to PTR.

It works. Yay!

I don’t know why whatever fix this is hasn’t been applied to the main game, but I’ll take it.

I enjoy my time with most of the campaign missions. The tutorial campaign with the island and the sea witch is fun, I work my way all the way up to Kael’thas campaign and make good progress in it, and then something happens. I get an error when logging in and can only play offline.

Not a problem, I don’t like competitive RTS stuff anyways since I’m bad at games.

My campaign progress is lost. I switch over to the main game and knock my graphics down to ye’ olde graphics and start from the Thrall’s tutorial again. It’ll be fun to see how much better I’ve gotten from when I first played anyway.

I breeze through the first two missions and then I get booted back to the menu.

Wait… wasn’t there supposed to be a part with an island and a sea witch naga thing? I figure an error happened and just try the 2nd mission again. Sure enough after completing the mission, I get booted to the menu.

I guess the official campaign just cut that part out for some reason?

Also, I find it odd that potions aren’t stacking. I actually kind of like the change though, because it encourages me to sell and use items far more often. In my first playthrough I’d end up hoarding stacks of pots through a campaign but now I use all of them since I can’t carry many of them between missions anyway.

I’m still working my way through the human campaign, but I just felt like posting about how odd the experience has been. Not bad, necessarily. I’m having fun. It’s just odd that reforged has so much jank.

edit:
After posting, it occurred to me to try the reforged mode in the official game version. Turns out, it works smoothly now and it even has the sea-witch island stuff along with stacking pots and all the stuff I was used to on the PTR. I’m guessing that this week they decided to transfer the PTR stuff to the official WC3 version. I guess someone IS still working on WC3 reforged.

To whoever that is, good job! I may have lost all my progress switching from PTR to official WC3, but hey, I’m still having fun and the game works smooth now!

This is indeed the case. The island and the sea witch were originally part of the Warcraft 3 demo, which was cut from the original version, partially brought back as a custom campaign in TFT (The voices were missing) and was then restored in the Reforged version’s campaign. But the classic graphics campaign never had the same treatment as they wanted to “keep the experience the same”.

That’s because the devs have mostly been gutted. Whoever works on the game now is practically keeping the game on life support. There was meant to be so much more but Blizzard cut the funding and fired the Classic Games staff who were responsible for the other classic games being remastered like Diablo 2 and Starcraft.

If only they did so after this game got the treatment it deserved…
