Dropping Frames Like Crazy

I seriously need some help, this is so annoying. I’ve been trying to play reforged since it came out, on different machines, and every single time I open it, regardless of settings, it constantly drops frames. I’ve left and come back multiple times hoping it would be patched, and nothing has improved. I watch youtubers play it buttery smooth, and mine is unplayable.
I mean a fight starts and then I suddenly lose 2-3 full seconds as the game freezes and then starts moving again. I move units into the fog of war, a building is revealed, I lose 2-4 full seconds as the enemy reacts and starts killing my whole army. It happens constantly, seconds apart. Campaign, custom maps, just any time I play in general. I have tried Windowed Fullscreen, I’ve tried maxing out or lowering my max fps, I’ve tried everything I was able to find online. My drivers are up to date. This problem occurs with the new graphics and with the classic graphics. I can play most modern games on this PC with no issue. Is there something I’m missing? Is my machine too weak?

Here are my specs:

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060

11th Gen Intel Core i7-11700K @ 3.60 GHz

16 GB RAM

Windows 10 if that matters

It’s not the most likely reason but I’d still reccomend updating to Windows 11 since Windows 10 is out of support. Your issue is quite unique to you, so it’s not likely to be patched. I’m a little confused why you didn’t ask for help back when it first started happening, but hear me out here:

There are two likely possibilities:

  • You described a situation where every time objects come into view the game freezes. This indicates an issue loading assets. There are many possible ways this could happen. An older, slower hard drive (not an SSD), especially one that hasn’t been defragged/optimized in a long time, could cause hitches when loading assets. The drive (HDD or SSD) could also simply be dying, or nearly full and having performance issues as a result. If you have multiple drives on your system, try installing the game on a different drive.

  • The other possibility is some other program, service or utility installed on your machine is interfering with the game.
The best way to troubleshoot this is to disable all non-microsoft services and startup applications. Check and see if the issue is still present. If not, then re-enable services and startup applications one at a time until the issue returns and you’ll have found your culprit. Even if every other game runs fine, you may still have some software that doesn’t play nicely with the game.

You again captainJunk! Are you work in Blizzard? Like the person who write this post, i have almost same specs and Windows 11 Pro with Kingston SSD 1TB!!! And my tray have only Geforce expirience on the way. I even doesn’t use any third-party antivirus, only Microsoft defender! What you talking about??? The game clearly have performance issue since release in 2020, Blizz have to optimize this! It`s not UE 5 with ultra realistic photo textures and advanced physics, rtx e.t.c.

Strange, I don’t think your username looks like Stitchlips94…

It literally has nothing to do with the current windows he is on. The patch is poorly optimized. Performance issues are clearly visible compared to patch 2.0.4 or whatever it was named. It is not the specs or windows, it’s the game itself.

Another thing, something was changed with the renderer also because D3D gear does not hook onto the game frame anymore and you cannot record the screen using that specific program.

You literally have no basis to make such a statement. Unless you have access to their exact hardware and software configuration, you are literally not able to confirm or deny any issue that

This comment is nonsense. Did you even read their post? They aren’t talking about the current patch. They spoke of a problem they’ve been having since the beginning.

The patch is no more or less “optimized” than the last one. Or the one before that. And it is not affecting everyone. I have observed no measurable decrease in performance from the previous patch (or the soon-to-be-current one.

I’ve never suggested the game should be winning any rewards for performance, but the current performance, at least for me, and most likely most people considering how few people are discussing this compared to the last time someone posted about performance problems, is not significantly different between the current, previous, or next (i.e. the one we had for 24 hours that is now releasing tomorrow) patches.

Your post is not constructive. When someone brings up an issue like this where something gets worse in the game is to first troubleshoot all possible areas of outside influence in order to rule out any non-game-specific cause. This also grants us insight into the exact area of the problem or bug or “optimization” that is causing their performance loss.

We also don’t even know anything about the user, as they have only ever made one post. All we do know is they claim to have always had performance problems, where most other players have had performance problems come and go with different patches or updates.

Given that many users, including myself, have had performance problems with some updates and not with others, and this user has ALWAYS had performance problems, the logical conclusion is the issue is on their side.

There were at least two major updates in which the game was forcing many users onto integrated graphics hardware instead of dedicated GPUS. Everoyne insisted the game was simply “poorly optimzied” when the actual issue was players were unknowingly being forced to use inferior integrated graphics instead of their kick-butt video cards.

The path any good QA Tester takes to narrow down the source of a problem is to eliminate all the things they have control over. Asking people to do so is not “victim blaming” like some people seem to think it is. It’s simply being methodical.
