Custom Games (serious thread)

Greetings,

I’ve dreamed of making a good custom game for over a decade now.
Learned a lot in the great www.hiveworkshop dot com community.
Spend days making these skins and icons for the upcoming project (US forum so I can’t post links normally, remove the dot):

But…

What happened?
With what we have seen so far, is there a reason to believe the company even cares about it’s… what’s the word used nowadays… ¨consumers¨?
And will the community care about this game, will there be any players or is it dead on arrival?

Hell… I can’t even create a Custom Game, any many, many people have the same issue (create button light up and nothing happens, reinstalling doesn’t fix it).

What do you honestly think, is it worth spending time trying to keep the game alive for modders, or is it as it looks like, a waste of time?

From what I’ve read it seems like not that many people are willing to do much with War3 and it will probably die with reforge instead of revive it.

For me personally, I’m pausing a 5 year old project that was almost done for public release. I hope that Bliz takes good care of War3, but I’m not that hopeful.

So I care about Warcraft 3, but I won’t touch it until they fix editor EULA and stable custom games (both create and play).

Nothing really. Hive Workshop is still pretty popular and strong. A lot of new and veteran map makers have returned for 1.32.

Possibly network related? Or maybe file system permission related? It works perfectly for me and hundreds of other people.

Nothing is really wrong with it. It is the same as SC2 which has some huge projects.

Yes, I know that the Hive starts on some projects, but the question is related to the game’s community as a whole. With a start like this, will people care enough to play our maps at all… or just a few fellow Hivers and that’s it.

The Custom Game creation worked for me, then it didn’t, no changes were made on my end. If you look in the Forums, or ask ingame lobby, quite a few people can’t create (or host) anything, and reinstalling doesn’t change it.

The worst part is WC3 was actually still getting custom content from modders even recently, but Reforged is going to kill all of WC3. Classic players are getting all the same issues as reforged, they literally broke the old game connecting it to this new one. Shouldn’t that be illegal? now that I think about it, breaking an 18yo game that people bought should not be legal

They butchered Classic Wc3 in the first place and that’s when most of the custom map makers quit the game. They sealed its fate when they came out with refurbished. The custom game scene is mostly dead and there’s only a handful of updated maps now. The company that ruined Wc3 has no integrity and it makes no sense to support them when they’re ruining the game industry. I suggest you Refund and never return. Never buy another activision/blizzard game again.

Try making custom scenarios in AoE2 DE and see if you like it. It’s the best RTS right now and Microsoft takes care of it. They care about their players and don’t oppress their map makers/community

People are still making a ton of content every day for WC3.

Most have not quite. Many have even returned to update their long forgotten projects.

Custom maps on BattleNet (not WANs or other methods to allow piracy) has not been this healthy in at least 8 years. Just look at how many lobbies there are during peek times. Even StarCraft II might be jealous.

By outsourcing to other companies to remaster time and time again. At least Blizzard kept most development of Warcraft III: Reforged in house.

My 4 favorite maps were getting weekly content updates and have active communitys in discord. Three are now unplayabley broken for the foreseeable future and will probably require a complete remake or thousands of hours of maintenance and bug hunting. The Fourth being orc glads is going strong, although disconnects / desyncs are a real problem.

Yeh that is a big issue. Largest cause seems to be mixing Reforged and Classic players. Possibly has to do with crossing 4GB virtual memory address line. Hopefully these issues will be debugged and fixed in future updates.

Hm Interesting hadn’t considered that. Bug hunting for a game dev is not a line of work i envy.

Does not help that WC3 was not originally made to be large address aware. When they first added 64bit support this showed with a ton of related crashes. Now 64bit support is mandatory and a lot of the issues have been solved. However some small ones may still exist.

For now I can only recommend playing with classic graphics if stability or desyncs are an issue. Classic graphics seems the most stable, either due to it being more polished or that it uses a lot less memory to function.

If there are crashes make sure to send the report to Blizzard to debug. If desyncs are common with a map I suggest reporting the issue to Blizzard so they can look at that map and potentially discover the cause.
