Custom Game - Cannot access download folder

As title says, when i try to host a custom game and click on the download folder or on open this folder, it freezes around 20-25 secs - which was the same on old client due to my folder being quite packed - after that freeze, nothing happens and i cannot click anything anymore, hosted games list is empty, cannot exist game or anything.

I am also having this problem. I’ve reinstalled the game a few times, all of the maps are in strange folders too.

Same here, in Classic there was no problem opening map folders with 2k-3k maps, now if you open a folder with like 50 maps the game becomes unresponsive after freezing for a while.
the problem still exists in version 1.32.4.15098

I’m having the same issue rn lmao. How TF does a billion-dollar company mess a game this much is beyond me.

I dont even have a download folder, where can i find it? Im trying to host, did all the port forwarding and cant find the download folder to select maps.

Thanks!

2025 still have that problem…did anyone fixd it?

Hi, for anyone that comes across this I think I’ve found the source of the issue. Some maps seem to cause the game to crash when it attempts to load them. For some maps this happens when the game attempts to view the folder containing the map in question, and for others it’s when you click on the map. Perhaps some asset or feature used by these maps that was functional in the original Wc3 has been upgraded or removed in reforged.

To fix the issue, you need to find which map file(s) is causing the crashes. Feel free to use your own method for diagnosing the issue. For anyone who is unsure on how to check their maps, I’ve spent some time writing a tutorial for you.

Setup
In your /maps/downloads/ folder, create four new folders: (1) unknown, (2) unsafe, (3) testing, (4) safe. Move all map files to unknown. Now, move a portion of the maps to testing.

Start Testing
Within the game client, open your custom games view and navigate to the testing folder. If your game crashes, one or more of the maps is causing an issue, but not necessarily all of them. Unfortunately it gets fiddly trying to determine which file is causing this kind of crash.

Diagnosing Crash on Load
I would suggest one of two approaches:

(1) Move files out of the testing folder (keeping them together) until the folder is viewable, then slowly move files back in until you get a crash. Using this you can determine which map(s) cause a crash.
(2) Create several subfolders (you can just name them “1”, “2”, “3”, …) and place one map file in each. Open those folders and you’ll know whether that map causes a crash.

Diagnosing Crash on View
If the folder opens without a crash, that’s a great sign. Now click on each map to make sure they can be viewed. If you click the map and it doesn’t cause a crash, that map is now safe. If clicking it causes a crash, it is now unsafe. Move map files to the corresponding folder. Repeat this process until you have checked every map file and determined which maps are safe and which cause crashes.

Cleaning Up
At this point, you hopefully have a folder with maps that cause crashes, and a folder with maps that don’t. You can delete the testing and unknown folders, as they should be empty.

Do what you wish with the unsafe maps (they are unplayable unless you can get an older copy of the game, so you may wish to delete or archive them). You can now return the safe maps directly into your downloads folder, or you may wish to organise them in some other way. I would recommend placing any future downloads of maps in a separate folder to avoid getting them mixed in with those that have already been tested, should crashes return.
