Currently testing/comparing Classic vs Reforged campaigns

Hi, I’m one of the authors of the Mass Recall mod (the port of the Brood War campaigns in SC2). I’m currently trying to figure out how things change between the Classic and Reforged mode.

I will be updating the thread as I continue, but one thing was immediately apparent:

  • Reforged and Classic campaigns are entirely separate.

This caused a lot of confusion. When you change “graphics”, you don’t just change the graphics: you also change the balance, maps and campaign progress.

The 2020 version has two copies of each campaign, Classic and Reforged. Per the patch notes, the grey background in Classic mode is only temporary, until they create something more polished. I think that only the campaigns are kept separate, Versus and Custom games are the same for everyone (barring specific compatibility issues).

Progress is tracked independently. This is why people reported their campaign progress disappeared and sometimes re-appeared: they simply had switched from one mode to another.

Classic campaign are as they have always been, though Reforged death sounds an UI additions like (+xp on heroes) are present. Reign of Chaos graphics, balance, missions (but I do hear Reforged death sounds). The extra three missions from Exodus of the Horde are not available in Classic mode, because they weren’t in the original game either.

Saves are not compatible between the modes.

Either you are in Classic, or you are in Reforged.

  • Normal difficulty has been changed in Reforged.

Enemy units have -10% hp and -10% damage, in Reforged maps in normal difficulty. Stats are still the same in Classic mode.

I have tested attack waves for the first ten minutes of Human05: March of the Sourge: they are exactly the same. I did not get to the point when the Lich joins the attack, so that will wait.

They changed the upkeep from 40 to 50 in the Reforged campaign for RoC which really sucks because the game is super easy now, theres a lot of little things they changed that make it easier :frowning:

I also wish they would bring back the single-player profiles for campaign mode… if my friend wants to play the game I want them to have their own profile, I hate the “reset progress” feature because I dont want to worry that its going to “accidentally” erase everything!

i don’t get why they did not put the classic mode in the difficulty selection. because the reforged hard mode is essentially normal mode while the original wc3 actually is challenging.

alot of people are bothered with the difference in difficulty but its so unclear that changing to classic graphics actually brings back the old balance.

I would not have known it either if some other people did not mention it on the forums due to their difference in experiences

Reforged campaign use the Frozen Throne units and balance. I suspect future balance changes will apply there as well.

Yup. Changing the mode is NOT just the graphics, it changes everything: balance, terrain, and even campaign progress.

Also, I’ve just seen that Normal difficulty in Reforged reduces enemy HP and damage by 10%. Everything is still the same in Classic.

they should make this very clear in the campaign selection, because i think the average person who does not visit the forums would even know classic mode exists, let alone know it also changes the balance

I have tested the attack waves in the first 10 minutes of the Human05 mission, they are exactly the same. I didn’t reach the point where the Lich engages, and people have reported it missing. I can’t say one way or the other. But attack waves are identical so far.

green 4 ghouls at -23:20
purple 4 ghouls 1 necromancer at -21:25
green 5 ghouls 1 necromancer at -20:25

Hard
purple 6 ghouls 2 abos at -27:25
green 6 ghouls at -26:25
purple 4 ghouls 2 abos 1 necro at -24:25
green 4 ghouls 2 wagons 1 necro at -23:25
purple 8 ghouls 3 necros at -21:25
orange 3 ghouls 3 zombies at -20:30
green 8 ghouls 3 necros at -20:25

Valid for both versions. Timings are ±10 seconds due to variable attack paths.

Is it uncensored though? Can you kill kid models and are all the original voice lines there?
