Crashing when loading save file

Playing through the main campaign, I have a save file that suddenly decided it doesn’t want to load anymore. The bar will slowly reach the ‘L’ in loading, then close out the game and crash, giving me an error report with this number:

Is there a fix?

Happens to me as well, after today’s update. Saved the game yesterday, cannot load today.

It’s not uncommon for saves of previous versions to be incompatible with new versions.

I’m not saying this time is intentional, but it often is. This isn’t the first time older saves were invalidated by a new version of the game.

That’s a report ID. Only Bliz can do anything with it, so if you want to know the details of the report, you’ll have to submit a support ticket. However, that’s assuming you checked the option to send the report to Bliz on the crash dialog box.

Game is crashing for me as well, either on loading mission, loading save, random action in the game, etc. Not every time but enough times to see that smth is wrong here.

The recent update seemed to have fixed the stuttering that was plaguing me, but introduced the issue with stutters.

Got the same crash when opening saved games.

saves are not compatible across game versions. There have been some exceptions with patches which did not contain any gameplay-related changes.

You will have to start whatever mission you were on from the beginning, unfortunately.

You’ll notice if you create a new save now, it will work just fine.

Mine too! Since this update (Version 2.0.2.22761), any saved games prior to this update will not load. The loading screen starts and gets around 1/3 of the way then crashes out to the desktop with no error message. Newe saved games after this update are working and loading fine.

Is there a way I can undo / roll back to the last/older version of the game? And NOT update to this new update?

Very frustrating how the “Play” button becomes an “Update” button and one has no choice but to run the update before being allowed to play the game. What if I would like to keep the older version of the game?

If it’s prior version saves, there’s no bug. In fact, it’s common when updates are made to the engine or other core functions.

If it’s happening with new saves under the current version then there is a bug.

No, but even if you did, Battlenet won’t allow older versions to connect, so you’d be forced to update before being able to play.

It’s something you choose to accept if you want to play the game.

if you read the thread before posting, you’d see there was already an explanation for this. Save files are not compatible across patches that modify units/balance/gameplay. The only way to avoid this is to try to complete maps in one sititng, or finish them promptly if a patch is coming soon.

No. You would not be able to play multiplayer if you were on a different version.

Again, this is not a bug with the game, this is how it has always been- patches that make any gameplay changes break save files because unit stats and features have changed. Unlike more modern games, War3 does not retain unit data from every past patch. You had 5 whole months since the last patch to complete a single player mission you had saved, and there was plenty of warning that this patch was happening. At least now you know that you need to wrap up any in-progress single player missions/games when a patch is incoming.

The good news is any progress loss is limited to the mission you were playing. You do not lose your progress through the campaign, and don’t need to save for that reason.

Thanks so much to everyone here for taking the time to explain, I really appreciate it. Great explanations.

I’m old school. Been around since before Warcraft 1, playing the first Strategy/RTS games etc. as a teen. After many years decided to play again. Much has changed, so this is all new to me navigating this online space, sorry I probably miss a lot and don’t read everything as a result.

Where a game is constantly evolving and “balancing” changes are being made, mostly due to multiplayer, I guess it makes sense. Not like the old days where you could just load the game from CD drive and choose to play campaign as a separate item. It is a pity.

Thanks again for taking the time to explain! XD

Well even back then there were patches. Obviously before Reforged it had been many years since the last patch, but now the game is being updated, for better or worse.

Yes, back then updates were a lot simpler; small bug/compatibility issue patches etc. Things are a lot more complicated now.
