Classic WC3 Custom map compatibility with Reforged Map Editor

Hey!

Sorry if this has been asked already, but is there any info on how compatible old Warcraft 3 maps are going to be with the Reforged Map Editor? Like do we have to remake all the maps or could we even possibly open them as is in the new Editor?

How this was dealt with Starcraft Remaster? I have one map soon on alpha phase, so I was thinking that is it worth to continue with it, or should I just wait for the Reforged Editor and start again?

I would say just do it. Just go for it. Warcraft 3 is about having fun. If you beat Warcraft 3: Reforged’s release date and release your map first, you have fun. If you play your map with HD graphics second after they release the new Reforged version, you also have fun. If they release a new editor that makes it impossible to do anything like Starcraft 2, then you download the open source version of the world editor and use that instead. You can’t lose, this new announcement is only and entirely pure win.

Yeah, good points you get there! I guess I’ll be going on with my map and wait for more information. :+1:t3:

Would be nice if they could be ported but most likely they will have to be entirely recreated due to different coding in the games. Some custom maps are pretty big and advanced compared to others. Things like footman frenzy probably will be remade quickly like it has been in sc2. But i hope that maps that i love like Broken Alliances will make it to reforged as well

Actually, it has turned out that they are fully compatible, and unless you have a map full of imports and very radical changes, you should be able to just open old maps with the New Editor and it will update all the models and graphics.

“The original version of Warcraft 3 is still basically compatible with the reforged version, and that includes also the maps, custom mods.”

“The way it should work is that if the maps existed before, they’ll just automatically load up.”

Thats pretty cool then, i guess alot of maps would be playable, only a few exceptions then. But i don’t think i will miss heavily imported ones like dbz or pokemon :stuck_out_tongue:

Is DotA back?
yeeeeeeah!

Yes, however if you made custom graphics it will stick out like a ugly eyesore. In fact it might not even render properly.

Yeah, that’s one thing. We are gonna have to wait for those maps with lots of custom models a bit longer since the makers have to make totally new models. In the other hand, if they are not totally alien, there could be a possibility to use WoW models, like you can quite easily import them to SC2. That’d be quite awesome.

There’s no reason to expect old models to not render. If they don’t work on War 3 now they most certainly won’t later.

Most of the complex maps created lika Dota, Diablo, WoW Arena, Founders of the North, Werewolf and Azeroth Wars relied on heavily modifying the World Editor to allow such maps to be created.

I personally doubt that I’ll be able to port over Azeroth Wars maps which required jassnewgen modifications and removing the upper limits on map sizes, units, doodads and many custom models.

Nearly every single amazing custom map relied on modifying the World Editor first before making them. Classic Games Dev team have said that they want everything to be ported over, but said it is a very difficult challenge to do so with the maps relying on World Editor modifications and custom models.

Perhaps you would be able to port it over if you don’t try to update the graphics in your map file.

Yeah, I guess that any map that used any third-party modifications probably won’t be available to be ported. At least not without effort. Heck, they might not even open now anymore with the 1.30 patch.

It’s DotA, short for Defense of the Ancients. Only the cheap Valve copy is called “Dota” (Dota 2, not an abbreviation of Defense of the Ancients 2)

I know, Mr Autism. Since it’s creation dota have also become an official word in the dictionary.

I was personally one of the editors behind Azeroth Wars and since I doubt it will be ported over successfully I got the idea to perhaps work on a portable version of the map right now and then do the crazy things after a successful port into Reforged. It would mean you have a half finished map, but that’s better than having to start from scratch when Reforged is released. Work as far as possible without using custom models and WE modifications and then finish it inside Reforged Editor.

Allow me to keep track of the times you’ve waved the :white_flag: in this thread

not just that. Maps are basically MPQ files, which are not used anymore by Blizzard games, so the new world editor most likely won’t even open them.

Is this conversation still going on? The SC2 Engine allows the import of legacy maps, why would the WC3 R engine not?

No. Someone just necroed my 2-month-old post. And the irony is that, if he had bothered to read the thread, it’s already explained that Reforged is fully compatible with current maps.

Dark Deeds
Life of a Peasant
and Tower Defender maps
are the only custom maps I can’t wait to play in battle.net

reforged is likely going to use the same map editor.
