Did you have to beat the game in hard mode to get a special ending? I’m playing an older classic version of the game.
You only have to beat the final Reign of Chaos, Night Elf Mission on Hard. It doesn’t matter what difficulty you beat the previous missions on.

Also, as far as I’m aware nothing like this has changed in the current version, and this remains the same today.
